HAYWARD, Calif. — With respect to the Portland State business school,
Alex Cisneros should have been a history major. He's certainly rewritten enough of it in his time with the Portland State track & field and cross country teams, as he did again Friday on the first day of the SF State Distance Carnival.
Â
Cisneros finished the 10,000 meters in 29:54.96, making him the first Viking to crack 30 minutes in the 10k since 1984. Cisneros moved up to third all time in the men's 10,000 meters at Portland State, behind Dave Henderson and Seppo Matela, who stand 1-2 with times of 29:30.04 and 29:34.60, respectively.
Â
Cisneros was also the first Viking to crack the top 10 in the men's 5,000 meters since 2005, after he finished in a personal-best 14:28.96 two weeks ago in his season opener at the L&C Spring Break Open. Additionally, Cisneros broke the indoor school records in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters earlier this season at the UW Indoor Open and UW Invitational, respectively. Cisneros holds the school record in the cross country 10k, as well, which he set at 30:29.8 at the NCAA West Regional in 2016.
Â
Sarah Medved and
Kaila Gibson have joined Cisneros in the history making this season, as they've set the school records in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and indoor 5,000 meters, respectively. Both Medved and Gibson competed in their first outdoor 5,000-meter races Friday, along with freshman
Meggie Karp. Medved won the third section of the women's 5,000 meters with her finish in 17:21.25, while Gibson and Karp finished in 17:24.46 and 17:54.79, respectively.
Â
Alana Chaplin made her own history while breaking the school record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the Teddy Twilight earlier this month, and ran her first 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday. Chaplin shaved 16 seconds off her personal best with her finish in 11:31.34, moving her up to ninth all time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Justin Wikler set his own personal best in the fourth section of the men's 10,000 meters, as he finished in 33:10.20 to beat his old best by just under a second.
Jason Rae joined Wikler in the same section of the 10,000 meters, and finished his first 10k as a Viking in 34:29.15.
Â
Andrew Stafford ran his first 1,500-meter race of the season, and finished in 4:13.81.
Jacob Emeterio also ran his first 3,000-meter steeplechase as a Viking, and finished in 10:07.73.
Â
The Vikings have three athletes entered in the men's 800 meters Saturday at the SF State Distance Carnival, but the majority of action for the Vikings will come from the Al Manuel Northwest Dual Invitational in Missoula, Mont., and the Pacific Open in Forest Grove, Ore.
Angela Mumford opened the Al Manuel Northwest Dual Invite for the Vikings while competing in the women's hammer Friday, but results from that event won't be available until after Saturday.
