Vikings Sign Four to 2018 Recruiting Class

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State women's soccer team announced the signing of four players Tuesday as part of last week's National Signing Day.
 
All four signees will join the Vikings as freshmen next season. Signees Sofi Papastamos and Alyssa Ulugalu comes to the Vikings from Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, respectively, where they were club teammates on La Roca FC. Addie Furrer and Amanda Dahl, meanwhile, join the Vikings from Santa Barbara, Calif., and Chandler, Ariz., respectively.
 
The Vikings' four signees join a Portland State women's soccer program that will enter its second year under head coach Katie Burton next season. Burton led the Vikings back to the Big Sky tournament for the first time since 2014 last season, and won a match at the Big Sky tournament for the first time since 2013.

Played for the San Tan Legacy Soccer Club from 2006-10…Played for the Sereno Soccer Club from 2010-18…Played five years on the ECNL team at Sereno.
 
PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS:
Daughter of Gary and Laura Dahl…Has a sister, Ashley Dahl…Lists wakeboarding and hiking as hobbies/interests.

COACH BURTON ON DAHL:
"Amanda will be a dangerous addition to our attack this fall. She's a very strong target that will help us transition to more of a possession style of play. She has the ability to bring the ball down quickly and help continue our attack into the final third. She is also very dangerous in and around the box. We are looking forward to her attacking abilities as I believe adding her to who we have now is going to make our attack multi-dimensional in comparison to last year."

Two-time All-Channel League first-team selection…Part of teams that won back-to-back Channel League championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17…Totaled 14 shutouts as her team's starting goalkeeper during the 2015-16 season…Recorded 11 shutouts as her team's starting goalkeeper during the 2016-17 season…Named her team's Defensive Player of the Year following the 2016-17 season…Earned varsity letters in soccer, track & field and lacrosse in high school.
 
CLUB/ODP:
Played for the Santa Barbara Soccer Club from 2009-18…Captained her club team from 2014-18…Named an ODP SoCal Alternate in 2016.
 
PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS:
Daughter of Kim Geritz and Mary Lou Furrer…National Merit Scholar…Lists backpacking, snowboarding and social justice as hobbies/interests…Hopes to become a trauma surgeon…Plans on majoring in political science with minors in biology and Spanish.

COACH BURTON ON FURRER:
"Addie will be rounding out a very strong group of goalkeepers on the squad. She has very quick feet and is tremendous at holding on to just about anything that comes her way. She has a very vocal presence in the back that instills confidence in the players in front of her. Her attitude and work rate on and off the field will further enhance the expectations, not only for the goalkeepers, but the rest of the team."

First-team all-state selection as a sophomore in 2015…Second-team all-state selection as a freshman in 2014…Won a state title with her team in 2015…Won regional championships in 2014 and 2015.
 
CLUB/ODP:
Played for Impact United from 2010-14 and La Roca FC with Viking classmate Alyssa Ulugalu from 2014-18…Placed first in the National League with La Roca FC in 2015 and 2016…National finalist with La Roca FC in 2015 and 2016…1st place in Regional League with La Roca FC for four straight years from 2014-17…Regional finalist with La Roca FC in 2014, 2016 and 2017…Won a regional championship with La Roca FC in 2015…Won three state titles with La Roca FC in 2014, 2015 and 2017, and was a state finalist in 2016…Played within the Utah ODP system from 2014-16.
 
PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS:
Daughter of Janet Beers and Angelo Papastamos…Has a sister, Alexis Papastamos…Member of her high school's Plant Club…Hopes to become an Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist…Plans on majoring in exercise science with a minor in athletic training.

COACH BURTON ON PAPASTAMOS:
"Sofi will be a great addition to our back line. She's a gritty defender and an excellent ball winner. Aerial battles are a big focus for us as a team, her presence will only enhance this area of the game for our squad. Offensively, she will also add to our transition to playing out of the back more as she is very consistent with her distributions into the next lines. Because of this, we can also see her as a defensive midfielder were she can showcase this strength."

BONNEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL:
Named to the All-State 5A second team by the Desert News as a junior in 2016…Named her team's Defensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2016.
 
CLUB/ODP:
Played for the Ogden Futbol Club from 2007-10, and La Roca FC from 2011-18…Placed second at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships with La Roca FC in 2015 and 2016…Won the Utah State Cup Championship with La Roca FC every year from 2011-15, and placed second in 2016 and 2017…Won the Farwest Regional Championship with La Roca FC in 2015, and placed second in 2012, 2014 and 2016...Played with the ODP Traveling Team in 2014 and 2015.
 
PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS:
Daughter of Lora and Fanu Ulugalu…Has a brother, Austin Ulugalu…Honor roll student for all eight terms in high school…Lists movies, camping, hiking, swimming and music as hobbies/interests.

COACH BURTON ON ULUGALU:
"Alyssa and Sofi having been playing together as starting center backs for the past five years, on a team that plays the current style we are moving towards. Like her incoming teammate, she is a physical presence both on the ground and in the air. She adds depth to our backline and will allow us to push some returners into more offensive positions which we were not able to do last year. She also has great vision when on the offensive side of the ball. Her qualities and attributes align well with the style of play we are transitioning into over the next year."
