SEATTLE, Wash. — If there were a
Sleepless in Seattle / Groundhog's Day mashup movie, you'd have to cast Portland State distance runner
Alex Cisneros.
Â
Two weeks after Cisneros broke the school record in the men's 5,000 meters at the UW Invitational in Seattle, Cisneros broke the record in the men's 3,000 meters on the same track at the UW Indoor Open. Cisneros broke the record as one of two records on the day for the Vikings, as
Saraia Collmer broke the record in the women's indoor pole vault for the second straight week.
Â
The Vikings have now broken five school records over the past 16 days, starting with the UW Invitational.
Â
And while Cisneros may not be Tom Hanks or Bill Murray, he's certainly proven himself to be faster than both after setting the record in the 3,000 meters with his finish in 8:16.45 Sunday. Cisneros beat the old record of 8:21.04 by more than four seconds, moving him past his old teammate T-Roy Brown, who set the 3,000-meter record at the UW Indoor Preview in 2014.
Â
Cisneros came into the meet with a personal best of 8:33.15 in the 3,000 meters, but beat that time by close to 17 seconds while placing third overall.
Â
Collmer, meanwhile, followed up her record-breaking performance last week in the women's indoor pole vault with her second straight record in the event. The women's indoor pole vault record had stood for 13 years before Collmer broke it last week, and Collmer has now beaten it twice in the past nine days.
Â
Collmer cleared 11-07.25 (3.54m) Sunday, beating the record of 11-05.25 (3.49m) she set last week at the Idaho Duals. Collmer cleared the heigh on her second attempt, and also took three attempts at 12-01.25 (3.69m) but failed on all three attempts.
Â
Katie Baxter nearly set a third school record for the Vikings despite making her first attempt as a Viking at the 600 meters. Baxter finished in 1:38.36, just over one second off the school record of 1:37.22 that Melissa Owens set in 2007. Baxter's time in the rare 600 meters is the best by a Vikings since then, and moved Baxter up to third all time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Chance Whitehurst also chased the record in the men's indoor triple jump, but just missed out despite setting a personal best with a mark of 49-04.50 (15.05m). Whitehurst came within eight inches of the school record that Yuriy Yermakov set at 50-00.50 (15.25m) in 2000 while placing second in the event.
Â
The Vikings also set a number of personal records Sunday in what was the Vikings' last meet before the Big Sky Indoor Championships that will take place Feb. 22-24 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Â
Kaila Gibson, who set the school record in the women's 5,000 meters two weeks ago, led a group of three Vikings who all set personal bests in the women's 3,000 meters. Gibson finished the 3,000 in 9:52.40, beating her old personal best by more than 35 seconds and moving her up to third all time in the event at Portland State.
Â
Sarah Medved already ranked eighth all time in the 3,000 meters going into the meeet, but moved up to sixth all time with her finish in 9:54.42 – close to 18 seconds better than her previous best of 10:12.16.
Â
Jocelyn Reynolds joined her teammates with her own personal best in the 3,000, as she finished in 10:48.67 to beat her old best by more than a second.
Â
Alana Chaplin, meanwhile, broke her PR in the mile by five seconds while finishing in 5:24.76.
Â
Austen Hvidsten broke his PR in the 800 meters for the second straight week, as he finished in 1:56.86. Hvidsten chopped five seconds off his personal best last week at the Idaho Duals, where he finished in 1:57.11 to crush his old PR of 2:02.16.
Â
Maya Jackson set two personal bests last week, as well, and followed it up with another PR in the 200 meters Sunday. Jackson finished the 200 in 26.11 seconds, edging the personal best of 26.14 seconds that she set last week at the Idaho Duals. Jackson also cracked 59 seconds in the 400 meters for the second straight week, finishing in 58.63 seconds after setting a personal best with her finish in 58.46 seconds last week.
Â
The Vikings will now take a week off before opening the Big Sky Indoor Championships next Thursday, Feb. 22, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
