SEATTLE, Wash. — The Portland State track & field teams couldn't match the fireworks of the back-to-back school records in the women's and men's 5,000 meters that they set Friday, but the Vikings wrapped the UW Invitational with more strong performances Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor.
Â
Chance Whitehurst and
Jean-Luc Toku placed third and fourth, respectively, in the men's triple jump, behind only Tuomas Kaukolahti of California and Keshun McGee, the Big Sky leader in the event from Eastern Washington.
Â
Whitehurst nearly matched his monster debut last week on his final attempt of the day, jumping 48-05.50 (14.77m). Whitehurst's mark stood just six inches shy of his debut mark of 48-11.50 (14.92m) at the Bronco Invitational, which moved him up to second all time in the indoor triple jump at Portland State.
Â
Toku jumped 47-01.50 (14.36m) while making his season debut in the triple jump Saturday. Toku's debut mark fell just three inches shy of the indoor personal best he set with a jump of 47-04.25 (14.43m) at last season's Big Sky Indoor Championships.
Â
Freshman
Josh Pikes and sophomore
Kamal-Craig Golaube, meanwhile, advanced to the prelims of the 60 meters and 60-meter hurdles, respectively.
Â
Pikes qualified out of the second heat of the men's 60 meters while matching Washington's Kemuel Sentana with a time of 7.09 seconds. Pikes knocked one-hundredth of a second off his qualifying time with a finish in 7.08 seconds in the prelims, but did not advance to the finals of the event.
Â
Golaube advanced to the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles after placing second in his heat in 8.48 seconds. Golaube ran nearly the same time in the prelims of the event, finishing in 8.49 seconds, but did not advance to the finals.
Â
The Vikings compete at two different meets next weekend between the Idaho Duals Friday, Feb. 2, and the Cougar Indoor Saturday, Feb. 3.
