Whitehurst's Monster Debut Leads Vikings at Bronco Invitational

NAMPA, Idaho —
Held out of the Portland State track & field team's first meet of the season last weekend, the Viking men's horizontal jumpers showed their eagerness to make their debuts Saturday as newcomers Chance Whitehurst and Jaron Barrow led the way with three top 10 marks between them at the Bronco Invitational.

Whitehurst won the men's triple jump at the meet while improving on each of his first three jumps in the competition, finishing with a monster debut mark of 48-11.50 (14.92m). That mark vaults Whitehurst up to second all time in the men's indoor triple jump at Portland State after only one meet as a Viking. Whitehurst's mark Saturday stands just 13 inches off the school record of 50-00.50 (15.25m) Yuriy Yermakov set in 2000.

Barrow also moved into the top 10 all time in the triple jump Saturday, and posted a top 10 mark in the long jump as well. Barrow moved up to seventh all time in both events, with jumps of 45-10.50 (13.98m) in the triple jump and 22-07.75 (6.90m) in the long jump. Whitehurst also competed in the long jump, finishing with a mark of 21-08.25 (6.61m).

Freshman Taylor Elliott had already made her PSU debut with a top 10 mark in the women's high jump last week, but improved on that mark while winning the event for the Vikings Saturday. Elliott cleared 5-05.25 (1.66m), moving her up to fifth all time in the indoor high jump at Portland State.

Additionally, Elliott's clearance gave her the best mark in the indoor high jump since 2006, when Ashley Quay, Lisa Gunderson and Damaris Tucker set three of the top five marks of all time, including the school record for Quay at 5-10.00 (1.78m).

Junior Austen Hvidsten added a fifth top 10 mark for the Vikings, as he ran the rare 600-meter race in 1:22.80. Hvidsten's time moved him up to fourth all time in the event, just behind former teammate and All-Big Sky honoree in the 800, Ben Richardson, who ran a 600-meter race in 1:22.27 last season.

The Vikings flirted with a school record once again in the men's and women's pole vault, with Keegan Winkle and Saraia Collmer each taking attempts above the current school records on the men's and women's sides.

Winkle, who also took attempts at what would have been a school-record height last week, took three attempts at 15-09 (4.80m) after clearing the bar on his first attempt at 15-03.00 (4.65m). Winkle couldn't record a clean attempt to set a new school record, however, and will remain at No. 2 in the record books for at least another week.

Collmer, meanwhile, cleared the bar at 10-06.00 (3.20m) in the women's competition, and then passed with the bar at 10-11.75 (3.35m). Collmer took three attempts with the bar at 11-05.75 (3.50m) – a height that would have broken the school record of 11-04.00 (3.46m) – but like Winkle, couldn't record a clean attempt to set the record.

The Vikings' multi-event athletes also had impressive meets while competing in a variety of events outside of the multis Saturday.

Freshman Kristen O'Handley, who moved up to eighth all time in the pentathlon last week, placed third overall in the prelims of the 60 meters, advancing to the final of the event with a time of 7.80 seconds.

Redshirt junior Donté Robinson, meanwhile, had a mini-heptathlon Saturday, as he competed in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and shot put. Like O'Handley, Robinson advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, after finishing fifth in the prelims in 8.56 seconds. Robinson's best event Saturday came in the pole vault, however, where he set a new personal best with a clearance at 13-03.50 (4.50m).

The Vikings remain in action next weekend, when they head north to Seattle for the two-day UW Invitational, Jan. 26-27, at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
