MOSCOW, Idaho —
David Hepburn took 46 newcomers into his first full meet as the Portland State track & field head coach Saturday at the Vandal Invitational and Multi Events. And if Saturday serves as any sort of indication, both Hepburn and his boatload of newcomers will be around for quite some time.

The Vikings set eight top 10 all-time marks at the meet, seven of which were set by newcomers Hepburn or assistant coach Josh Seitz signed over the offseason. Additionally, newcomers claimed five of the Vikings' seven event wins at the meet.

Freshman Josh Pikes stood out among the Vikings' newcomers, as he swept the men's 60 and 200 meters at the meet while moving into the top 10 all time at Portland State in each event.

Pikes won the finals of the men's 60 meters in 6.90 seconds, moving him up to third all time at Portland State in the event after only one meet as a Viking. Pikes also moved up to third all time in the 200 meters while winning the event in 21.87 seconds. Pikes' time made him just the third athlete in Portland State history to ever crack 22 seconds in the indoor 200 meters, and broke his 200-meter prep personal best of 21.88 seconds.

Fellow freshman Taylor Elliott also set a top 10 all-time mark Saturday while winning the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-04.25 (1.63m). Elliott moved into a tie for seventh all time with her mark Saturday, equaling the mark Mandy Keifer set in 2012.

Elliott joined fellow freshman Kristen O'Handley in the top 10 all time in the high jump, after O'Handley set a top 10 all-time mark in the high jump while competing in the pentathlon Friday. O'Handley cleared 5-03.75 (1.62m) in the pentathlon high jump, tying her for ninth all time with Joenisha Vinson, who also set her mark while competing in the pentathlon in 2013.

O'Handley placed second in the pentathlon Friday with a final score of 3,218 points – good enough to move her up to eighth all time in the event at Portland State.

Sophomore Angela Mumford joined her fellow newcomers with a top-10 performance in the weight throw, as she placed fourth with a throw of 48-04.50 (14.74m) Saturday. Mumford's mark moved her up to eighth all time in the event at Portland State, and gave her the Vikings' best throw in the event since 2009.

Junior newcomer Saraia Collmer also moved into the top all time at Portland State in the pole vault while winning the event with a clearance of 10-11.50 (3.34m). Collmer moved up to No. 2 all time in the indoor pole vault with her mark Saturday, behind the school record of 11-04.00 (3.46m) that Krystal Saling set in 2005.

Redshirt senior Katie Baxter added another event win for the Viking newcomers, as she edged Viking teammate Maya Jackson for the win in the women's 400 meters while finishing in 59.43 seconds.

Junior Kaila Gibson wasn't competing in her first meet as a Viking Saturday, but still posted a top-10 mark like the others. Gibson placed second in the women's mile in 5:04.55, beating her old personal best by more than a second and moving her up to 10th all time in the event at Portland State.

Sophomore Nia Powdrell won the women's 200 meters in 25.28 seconds in her first action since injuring her hamstring at the beginning of the 2017 outdoor season. Powdrell's time beat her season-opening time as a freshman by close to seven-tenths of a second, and Powdrell also set a new personal best in the finals of the 60 meters with her finish in 7.77 seconds.

Senior Donté Robinson beat his season-opening mark from a year ago in the heptathlon while winning the event with 4,988 points. Robinson placed second or better in all seven events of the heptathlon, and won or tied for the win in five of the seven events.

Sophomore Kamal-Craig Golaube placed third behind two other Big Sky athletes in the finals of the men's 60-meter hurdles, and did so while finishing just off the school record he tied as a freshman last season. Golaube finished in 8.25 seconds, just three-hundredths behind the school record he and Peter Jason Tait share at 8.22 seconds.

The Vikings will be back in action next week at the Bronco Invitational, which takes place next Saturday, Jan. 20, at Jackson Track in Nampa, Idaho.
