McMINNVILLE, Ore. — The Portland State track & field team sent a small group of athletes to the Linfield Open Saturday, less than a week before the start of the Big Sky Championships, May 10-13, in Sacramento, Calif.

The Viking women's throwers and men's distance runners made up the Portland State contingent at Maxwell Field.

Freshman
Mikenna Marchment led the Viking women's throwers, as she posted over a five-foot seasonal best in the javelin with a throw of 120-05 (36.70m). Marchment nearly matched her prep personal best of 121-07 (37.05m) with the throw, but came up 14 inches short.

Sophomore
Kendra Negron posted an even bigger personal best in the hammer, however, as she finished with a best throw of 107-01 (32.63m), more than 10 feet better than her previous best of 96-10 (29.53m).

Sophomore
Austen Hvidsten beat his personal best in the 800 meters by two-hundredths of a second with his finish in 1:58.56. Hvidsten also beat his seasonal best by more than four seconds with his time Saturday, as he had previously finished in 2:02.75 at the John Knight Twilight on April 7.

Freshman
Jacob Emeterio also posted a personal best in the men's 5,000 meters Saturday, as he finished in 16:23.18 to shave a second off his previous best of 16:24.22. Fellow freshman
Andrew Stafford also competed in the 5,000 meters and finished in 15:49.17.

The Vikings open the Big Sky meet Wednesday, with the combined events taking place over the first two days of the meet, followed by the rest of the meet on Friday and Saturday.
