MONMOUTH, Ore. — For anyone familiar with the movie
Twister, picture the scene where the cow is being blown around in the tornado. Got it? Well that was how the Portland State track & field team must have felt Friday while competing in strong winds and off-and-on rain at the John Knight Twilight meet at Western Oregon University's McArthur Field.
Â
The blustery conditions meant the Vikings fought headwinds in nearly every event, limiting what the Vikings could accomplish at the meet. Freshman
Kamal-Craig Golaube, for instance, ran the men's 110-meter hurdles in a headwind of 3.9 meters per second, while fellow freshman
Maya Jackson faced a headwind of 4.0 meters per second in the women's 200 meters.
Â
The Vikings still pulled out four event-wins Friday, however, starting with Golaube fighting the wind to pull out a victory in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Golaube won the event in 15.70 seconds, .70 seconds behind his seasonal best this season but understandable given the heavy headwind.
Â
Sophomore
Jean-Luc Toku did not fight a headwind in the long jump, and instead jumped with a +4.6 meters per second wind reading. Toku jumped 21-10.00 (6.65m) on his first attempt of the day, beating Concordia's James Phillips, who finished second with a jump of 21-08.75 (6.62m).
Â
The Viking men also pulled out a win in the 4x400-meter relay, beating the field by close to eight full seconds.
Mitchell Gable,
Ben Richardson, Donté Robinson and
Christian Wood ran the relay for the Vikings, and won in 3:23.82 in their first completed relay of the outdoor season.
Â
Senior
Cheryn Trapp pulled out a win for the Viking women, too, as she beat the field in the women's 5,000 meters by more than 17.5 seconds. Trapp won in 18:27.39, beating Willamette's Olivia Mancl, who placed second in 18:44.94. Fellow senior
Kennedy Martin also set a new outdoor personal best in the race, as she finished in 18:48.97.
Â
The Vikings will hope to leave the bad weather behind them for their next meet, as they head to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational, April 14-15.
