Toku, Bacon Set Pair of School Records for Vikings at Triton Invitational

RESULTS (PDF)

LA JOLLA, Calif. —
Two school records fell Saturday at the Triton Invitational, as Jean-Luc Toku and Troy Bacon set the Portland State records in the men's triple jump and discus, respectively, while leading the Vikings in their penultimate regular-season meet of the season.

Toku broke a 44-year-old school record in the triple jump while winning the Division I section of the event with a mark of 48-07.25 (14.81m). Toku bested Don Hall for the school record Saturday, beating the mark Hall set at 48-06.00 (14.78m) in 1973.

Toku also moved up to seventh in the Big Sky in the triple jump with his mark Saturday, and moved into a tie for 57th in the NCAA west region – putting him on the qualifying bubble for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the end of May.

Toku was always a likely candidate to break the school record in the triple jump, however, having moved up to second all-time as a freshman last season.

Bacon's school record Saturday came as a bigger surprise, as the sophomore, who also competes for the Viking football team, beat his personal best coming into the meet by nearly 10 feet while setting the record in the discus. Bacon finished with a best throw of 163-08 (49.88m), breaking a 21-year-old school record that Ryan Alexander set at 162-04 (49.48m) in 1996.

A number of other Vikings moved up the Portland State record books with their own performances Saturday, including senior Ben Richardson, who moved up to fifth all-time in the men's 800 meters with a personal best of 1:51.14.

Richardson's personal best comes as the latest performance of a crazy run for the Viking senior, who was still sidelined from an injury he suffered at the Big Sky Indoor Championships just three weeks ago. Richardson didn't run during the outdoor season until the John Knight Twilight on April 7, and then could only muster a time of 1:58.87 in the 800 meters. Richardson shaved five seconds off that time with his finish in 1:53.56 last week at the Texas Invitational, however, and then saved two more seconds off that time with his finish Saturday.

Richardson, who was an All-Big Sky performer in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters last season, also moved up to fourth in the Big Sky this season. Additionally, Richardson put himself on the qualifying bubble for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with his time Saturday, as he moved up to 60th in the NCAA west region.

Alana Chaplin and Michael Biedebach, meanwhile, moved up the Portland State records books in the women's and men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.  Chaplin moved up one spot to ninth in the women's 3k steeplechase, as she posted an eight-second personal best of 11:48.15.

Biedebach knocked 17 seconds off his personal best in the men's 3k steeplechase, as he finished in 9:23.10 to move up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State.

Sarah Medved also moved up to eighth all-time in the 3,000 meters with her finish in 9:57.43 Saturday. Medved hadn't run the 3,000 meters outdoors as a Viking, but beat her outdoor prep personal best in the 3,000 meters by 65 seconds.

Junior Ta'mara Richey remained at fifth all-time in the women's long jump, but cracked six meters for the first time in the event with a new personal best of 19-09.75 (6.04m). Richey also stayed at second within the Big Sky with her jump Saturday, but moved up in the NCAA west region rankings and now stands in qualifying position for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in a tie for 39th.

Freshman Maya Jackson nearly entered the top 10 all-time in the women's 400 meters, as she finished in 57.70 seconds Saturday – only two-hundredths of a second behind the current No. 10 time at Portland State of 57.68 seconds. Jackson still shaved nearly a full second off her seasonal best with her finish, as her previous best this season was 58.61 seconds, set three weeks ago at the Legends of Track & Field Invitational.

Senior Akayla Anderson didn't move up the PSU rankings in the 100-meter hurdles, but posted a seasonal best in the event for the third straight meet. Anderson finished in 13.68 seconds, tying the Big Sky-leading time in the event coming into the weekend, set by Weber State's Tawnie Moore. Moore was in the same race as Anderson at the Triton Invitational, however, and lowered her Big Sky-leading time to 13.56 seconds.

The Vikings will now compete in one final regular-season meet at the OSU High Performance meet next Friday and Saturday. The Vikings will then take a week off after the OSU meet, before heading down to Sacramento, Calif., for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 10-13.
