LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Senior
Genna Settle isn't quite a legend yet, but she sure didn't look out of place at the Legends of Track & Field Invitational Saturday at UCLA's Drake Stadium.
Â
Settle lowered her own Big Sky-leading time in the 100 meters Saturday, as she placed fifth in the invitational section of the women's 100 meters in 11.82 seconds. Settle placed behind three Pac-12 runners at the meet while beating her previous best time this season by a tenth of a second.
Â
Settle also placed fifth in the invitational section of the women's 200 meters, finishing in 24.33 seconds. Settle leads the Big Sky in the 200 off her time of 23.97 seconds at the Trojan Invitational, and now owns three of the top four times in the 200 meters this season, including her finish in 24.09 seconds at the Willamette Invitational last Saturday.
Â
Fellow senior
Akayla Anderson lost the Big Sky lead in the 100-meter hurdles that she held coming into the week, but still lowered her time in the event while finishing seventh in the invitational section in 13.95 seconds. Anderson's time beat her previous best this season by close to two-tenths of a second, as she dipped under 14 seconds for the first time this season.
Â
Senior
Mitchell Gable shaved three-tenths of a second off his personal best in the 200 meters Saturday, finishing the college section of the race in 22.04 seconds. Gable's time beat the PR of 22.34 he set at the Willamette Invitational last Saturday, and put him just outside the top 10 all-time at Portland State. The No. 10 time in the outdoor 200 currently stands at 21.99, set by Ryan Dotson in 1999.
Â
Christian Wood joined Gable with his own seasonal best in the college section of the 200 meters, as he finished in 22.52 seconds, two-tenths better than his season-opening time of 22.72. Wood shaved close to six-tenths of a second off his seasonal best in the 400 meters, as well, as he finished in 50.05 seconds to beat his time of 50.64 from the Willamette Invitational last Saturday.
Â
Freshman
Kamal-Craig Golaube knocked .09 seconds off his seasonal best in the 110-meter hurdles while placing sixth in the college section of the race in 15.00 seconds. Golaube opened his season with a time of 15.09 seconds at the Trojan Invitational, and finished in 15.16 seconds last week at the Willamette Invitational.
Â
Junior Donté Robinson, meanwhile, showed dramatic improvement in the men's javelin, two years after he first competed in the event as a Viking at the 2015 Rose City Preview. Robinson threw 169-10 (51.76m) at that meet, but beat that mark by 12-and-a-half feet with a throw of 182-04.75 (55.60m) Saturday in his first javelin competition since then.
Â
Junior
Ta'mara Richey joined Robinson as a field-event standout for the Vikings, as she posted a seasonal best in the triple jump with a mark of 38-05.00 (11.71m).
Â
Sophomore
Jean-Luc Toku didn't post an improvement on the men's side of the triple jump Saturday, but still surpassed 14 meters for the second time this season with a best jump of 46-00.75 (14.04m). Toku placed second in the college section of the triple jump, just five inches behind event-winner Sammie Houston of Minnesota, who won the section with a jump of 46-05.75 (14.17m).
Â
Senior Brand Williams also placed second in the invitational section of the women's long jump, as she came within 1.25 inches of her seasonal best with a best jump of 18-05.25 (5.62m) Saturday.
Â
The Vikings return to the state of Oregon for their next meet, as they head to the John Knight Twilight Friday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore.
