AUSTIN, Texas — Ta'mara Richey was the lone Viking competing in the Lone Star State Friday, but the junior jumper wore the spotlight well as she took over the Big Sky lead in the women's triple jump while cracking 40 feet for the first time at the Texas Invitational.
Â
Richey jumped 40-11.50 (12.48m) on her first attempt of the day, winning her flight and beating the Big Sky-leading mark in the event coming into the day by 7.5 inches. Montana's Samantha Evans, who placed second to former Viking ChaQuinn Cook at last season's Big Sky Outdoor Championships, came into the day with the Big Sky lead off her mark of 40-04.00 (12.29m).
Â
Richey also moved into a tie for 25th in the NCAA West region in the triple jump, based on marks coming into the weekend, putting her in contention for a spot at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the end of May.
Â
Additionally, Richey crushed her personal best by well over a foot with her jump Friday, and beat her 2017 seasonal best by more than two feet. Richey's personal best coming into Friday was 39-08.50 (12.10m), set at the 2015 Big Sky Outdoor Championships, 15 inches behind Richey's jump at the Texas Invitational.
Â
The new personal best moves Richey up to fourth all-time at Portland State in the outdoor triple jump, behind former Big Sky champions Gayle Imran-Sideris and ChaQuinn Cook, and All-Big Sky performer Nkeiru Ugwoaba.
Â
Richey will also compete in the women's long jump on the second day of the Texas Invitational Saturday. She won't be alone this time, however, as four other Vikings join her in competition tomorrow, starting with senior
Ben Richardson in the men's 800 meters at 12:05 p.m. (CT).
