PORTLAND, Ore. — Saturday was a day for debuts – both as the Portland State track & field team made its outdoor season debut at the L&C Spring Break Open, but also as a number of individual Vikings made their career outdoor debuts, especially on the men's side.
10 men's athletes made their career outdoor debuts at the L&C Spring Break Open Saturday, and none did so more impressively than
Troy Bacon, who moved into the top 10 all-time at Portland State in the discus after just one meet competing outdoors for the Vikings.
Bacon, who will be a junior offensive lineman for the Portland State football team this fall, placed seventh overall in the discus with a throw of 152-08 (46.55m) – the best throw by a Viking in the discus since Ryan Alexander set the school record at 162-04 (49.48m) in 1996.
Bacon also competed in the shot put Saturday, and placed 11th overall with a best throw of 41-11.25 (12.78m).
Outside of Bacon, a number of Viking men's runners made their debuts in the men's 1,500 and 5,000 meters.
Freshman
Andrew Stafford led a group of six newcomers in the men's 1,500 meters, as he placed 16th overall in 4:08.60. Fellow freshmen
Liam Jemison and
Gabe Bader followed at 21st and 23rd overall, respectively, in times of 4:12.75 and 4:15.28.
Jacob Emeterio,
Austen Hvidsten and
Cameron Gaskell finished 26th, 27th and 33rd overall, respectively from there, in times of 4:16.52, 4:16.56 and 4:18.00.
Freshman
Michael Biedebach, meanwhile, led a group of three Vikings in the men's 5,000 meters while making his outdoor debut Saturday. Biedebach placed third overall in his first outdoor 5,000-meter race as a Viking, as he finished in 14:56.23. Fellow freshman
Alec Hornecker also made his debut in the race, and placed 13th overall in 15:10.16.
Freshman
Se Min Park made his outdoor debut while finishing the 100 and 200 meters in 11.56 and 23.65 seconds, respectively.
Sophomore transfer
Kendra Negron provided the lone debut for the Vikings on the women's side, as she competed in the hammer and discus this Friday and Saturday. Negron placed 25th overall with a throw of 86-06 (26.36m) in the hammer out at Clackamas Community College Friday, and then placed 35th overall in the discus with a throw of 78-10 (24.04m) at the Eldon Fix Track Saturday.
Now with their first outdoor meet out of the way, the Vikings can turn their attention to next week's Willamette Invitational, which the Vikings will compete at in Salem, Ore., on March 25.
