LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Senior
Genna Settle picked up where she left from her title-filled indoor season Saturday, as she and the Portland State track & field team opened their outdoor season at the Trojan Invitational, hosted by USC at the Loker Track.
Â
Settle was competing for the first time since sweeping the 60- and 200-meter titles at the Big Sky Indoor Championships three weeks ago, and showed no signs of rust while opening with strong times in the 100 and 200 at the Trojan Invitational Saturday.
Â
Settle finished eighth overall in the 200 in 23.97 seconds, just a few tenths of a second behind her time of 23.75 seconds in the indoor 200 three weeks ago – a time that set the school, conference and championship records in the indoor 200.
Â
By comparison, Settle opened her 2016 outdoor season with a time of 24.45 seconds in the 200, putting her close to a half-second ahead of last season's pace, when she ended the season with a second-place finish in the outdoor 200.
Â
Settle also finished seventh overall in the 100 meters in 11.92 seconds, in line with her debut last season, when she finished her first 100-meter race in 11.87 seconds at the Aztec Invite.
Â
Junior
Ta'mara Richey followed in Settle's footsteps with a strong debut of her own in the women's long jump Saturday. Richey placed second overall with a best jump of 19-00.00 (5.79m), cracking 19 feet for the second straight meet after she set an overall personal best while placing fourth at the Big Sky Indoor meet with a jump of 19-08.25 (6.00m). Senior
Brandi Williams also competed in the long jump Saturday, and placed third overall while tying her Portland State personal best with a best jump of 18-06.50 (5.65m).
Â
Meanwhile, fellow senior
Mitchell Gable rebounded from an injury that limited him at the Big Sky Indoor Championships to finished fifth overall in the men's 400 meters with his time of 48.27 seconds Saturday. Gable's time ranks .22 seconds behind his outdoor personal best of 48.05, but Gable limped to the line in 57.54 seconds in the finals of the 400 meters just three weeks ago.
Â
Additionally, Gable's time Saturday beat all but two of Gable's times in the outdoor 400 last season, when he placed eighth in the finals of the 400 at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships at the end of the season.
Â
The Vikings will now look to sustain their hot start into their next meet, when the Vikings heads south on I-5 for the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., on March 25.
