MOSCOW, Idaho — The Portland State track & field team got into the competitive spirit Friday, as the Vikings competed in a rare five-team, round-robin dual meet in the Idaho Duals at the Kibbie Dome. The Vikings won six events at the meet between the men and women, and totaled 17 podium finishes.
Â
The Viking women accounted for four of the event wins for the Vikings, and senior
Genna Settle led the way with a 60-200 sweep. Settle won the finals of the 60 meters in 7.63 seconds, a seasonal best by one-hundredth of a second, and won the 200 meters in 24.76 seconds. Settle blew away the field in the 200 meters, as she beat teammate
Rachel Vinjamuri, who placed second in the event, by more than half a second as Vinjamuri finished in 25.30.
Â
Vinjamuri won the 400 meters earlier in the day Friday, adding another event win for the Viking women. Vinjamuri won the 400 in a seasonal-best 57.01 seconds, a full second ahead of her nearest competitor, Montana's Olivia Ellis, who finished second in 58.03 seconds.
Â
Senior
Akayla Anderson showed similar dominance in winning the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.63 seconds. Anderson's time put her more than four-tenths of a second ahead of Montana's Ellis, who placed second to yet another Viking with her time of 9.06 seconds.
Â
The Viking men, meanwhile, picked up event wins behind
Ben Richardson in the 800 meters and Donté Robinson in the high jump.
Â
Richardson won the 800 meters while finishing in an indoor personal-best 1:52.73, beating his nearest competitor by more than three-quarters of a second. Richardson's time moves him up to fifth all-time in the indoor 800 meters at Portland State, and also vaults him into the top five in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Robinson also won his event with a new personal best, as he cleared 6-06.675 (2.00m) in the high jump, three-quarters of a inch better than his old best of 6-06.00 (1.98m) that he set during the heptathlon high jump at the Ed Jacoby Invitational/Multi earlier this season. Robinson's mark moves him up one spot in the Vikings' record book to fifth all-time in the indoor high jump at Portland State.
Â
Outside of the event winners, a number of other athletes filled the podium for the Vikings, including senior
Mitchell Gable, who hit the podium twice Friday behind a second-place finish in the 400 meters, and a third-place finish in the 200 meters. Gable placed second in the 400 meters behind a personal-best time of 48.73 seconds, a time that beat his old best by more than a quarter of a second and moved him up to second all-time in the event at Portland State. Gable also set a new personal best while placing third in the 200 meters in 22.35 seconds, moving him up to eighth all-time in the event.
Â
Freshman
Nia Powdrell also made multiple podium finishes Friday, as she placed second in the long jump and third in the 200 meters, and just barely missed a third podium finish while placing fourth in the 60 meters.
Â
Powdrell had not completed an indoor long jump for the Vikings before Friday, but showed no signs of struggling with that while finishing with a jump of 18-06.00 (5.64m) to come within four inches of winning the event. Powdrell's jump also put her ahead of her more experienced Viking teammates in junior
Ta'mara Richey and Senior
Brandi Williams, who placed third and fourth behind Powdrell, respectively.
Â
Powdrell then posted an indoor personal best while placing third in the finals of the 200 meters, finishing in 25.53 seconds.
Â
Sophomore
Jean-Luc Toku was also a double-podium finisher for the Vikings, as he continued his strong season in the long jump and triple jump while making the podium in both events Friday. Toku placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 47-01.75 (14.37m), the second time in three meets this season that Toku has cracked 47 feet in the event.
Â
Toku placed third in long jump while setting a personal best in the event for the second straight week. Toku finished with a mark of 22-03.50 (6.79m) Friday, more than an inch better than the 22-02.25 (6.76m) he jumped last week at the UW Invitational.
Â
The competitive nature of the Idaho Duals also allowed the Vikings to spread out into more events at the meet, including the pole vault, where sophomore transfer
Keegan Winkle cleared his first bar as a Viking. A week after no-heighting at the UW Invitational, Winkle cleared 14-03.25 (4.35m) in the pole vault to place fourth in the event, three spots ahead of Robinson, who also competed in the pole vault as training for the heptathlon. Winkle's debut clearance moves him into third all-time in the indoor pole vault at Portland State, and stands as the best mark by a Viking in the event since All-American and future Portland State Hall of Famer Nick Trubachik cleared 14-07.25 (4.45m) during a heptathlon in 2010.
Â
Senior
Christian Wood also made his competitive debut in the triple jump at the meet, and placed fourth with a mark of 42-04.25 (12.91m).
Â
Additionally, Richey ventured into several different events for the Viking women in training for the pentathlon, as she competed in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and high jump. Richey set a new personal best while clearing 4-08.75 (1.44m) in the high jump, and matched the personal best of 9.54 seconds she set in the 60-meter hurdles while competing in the pentathlon at the Ed Jacoby Invitational/Multi at the beginning of the season.
Â
The Vikings will return to competition at two meets next weekend, as they will split up between the Husky Classic/UW Open in Seattle and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Husky Classic/UW Open will run from Feb. 10-12, while the Don Kirby Invitational will run from Feb. 10-11.
