SEATTLE, Wash. — The Portland State track & field team closed its indoor regular season Sunday, as the Vikings competed at the last-chance UW Indoor Open ahead of the Big Sky Indoor Championships in just under two weeks.
Â
The Vikings set nine personal bests at the UW Indoor Open Sunday, including three in the men's mile, where freshmen
Michael Biedebach,
Alec Hornecker and
Andrew Stafford all shaved time off their time last week at the Cougar Indoor Invitational.
Â
Biedebach led the Viking freshmen in the indoor mile, as he finished 45th overall in 4:26.09, more than nine seconds faster than his time of 4:35.35 last week. Hornecker followed Biedebach at 55th overall in 4:29.83, close to four seconds faster than his time of 4:33.66 from a week ago. Stafford, meanwhile, shaved over four seconds off his time in the mile last week, as he finished in 4:30.83, well ahead of his time last week of 4:35.20.
Â
Fellow freshman
Liam Jemison also dipped under his time in the 800 meters from a week ago, as he finished in 2:00.67 to beat his time of 2:01.63 from last week by close to a full second.
Â
Troy Bacon and Donté Robinson, meanwhile, each set new personal bests in the shot put, while Bacon – an offensive lineman on the Vikings' football team – was making his indoor track debut for the Vikings. Bacon finished with a best throw of 45-10.75 (13.99m), moving him up to seventh all-time in the indoor shot put after his first meet for the Vikings.
Â
Robinson – who was competing in the shot put, long jump and 60-meter hurdles in preparation for the heptathlon at the Big Sky meet – set a new personal best in the shot put with his throw of 39-11.50 (12.18m). Robinson's throw beat the mark of 39-09.25 (12.12m) he set in the heptathlon at the Ed Jacoby Invitational/Multi at the beginning of the season. Robinson has now beaten four of the seven marks he originally set at that meet, putting him in good form going into the Big Sky meet.
Â
Senior
Christian Wood also set a new personal best in the triple jump for the third straight meet since he debuted in the event at the Idaho Duals last Saturday. Wood finished with a mark of 42-07.00 (12.98m) Sunday, beating his mark of 42-05.25 (12.93m) at the Cougar Indoor Invitational last Saturday by 1.75 inches.
Â
Freshman
Maya Jackson also lowered her time in the 400 for the second straight week, as she followed up the personal best of 59.57 she set at the Idaho Duals last Saturday with a time of 59.51 seconds Sunday. Jackson also ran her first indoor 200-meter race as a Viking, and finished in 26.60 seconds.
Â
Fellow freshman
Kamal-Craig Golaube didn't set a personal best Sunday, but still dipped under 8.50 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles for the fourth straight time, as he placed ninth overall in 8.47 seconds. Golaube set a personal best of 8.38 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles at the Cougar Indoor Invitational last Saturday, moving him up to fourth all-time in the event at Portland State.
Â
The Vikings will now take a weekend off before heading to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Feb. 23-25.
