CORVALLIS, Ore. — Personal bests are made to be obliterated, at least for Portland State super senior
Amanda Boman. Two weekends after Boman shaved more than 34 seconds off her personal best in the 10,000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays, Boman shaved close to 30 seconds off her personal best in the 5,000 meters at the OSU High Performance Meet Friday at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Â
Boman placed second in the 5,000 meters in 16:39.82, well ahead of the 17:08.25 she ran at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open to open the outdoor season on March 19. Boman's new PR moves her up to third all-time in the 5,000 meters at Portland State, behind only Bianca Martin and Debbie Myra, who set the school record in the 5,000 at 16:22.90 way back in 1987.
Â
Boman's recent PRs in the 5,000 and 10,000 also have her among the conference favorite in each event going into the Big Sky Championships in two weeks. Boman moved up to third in the Big Sky with her time in the 5,000 Friday, and ranks fourth in the Big Sky in the 10,000 meters off her time at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Â
Boman beat out several strong runners in taking second in the 5,000 Friday, including several post-collegiate runners. Nicole Blood, an Oregon Duck alum and High Performance West athlete, won the 5,000 in 16:21.65, but Boman finished as the top collegiate athlete while edging out Oregon freshman Sarah Baxter for second by half a second. Boman also beat out Kristen Findley of High Performance West, Polina Carlson of Brooks and Lindsey Drake of the Bowerman Track Club. Boman's Viking teammates
Sarah Medved and
Cheryn Trapp also competed in the women's 5,000 meters Friday, and finished in 17:36.11 and 17:55.13, respectively.
Â
Alex Cisneros, meanwhile, set a new personal best while competing in the 'A' Section of the men's 5,000 meters Friday. Cisneros finished in 14:48.84, close to five seconds faster than the PR of 14:53.46 he set at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. Senior
Neil Seibert also finished the 'B' Section of the 5,000 meters in 15:33.49.
Â
Freshman
Nevina De Luca set a new personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 11:26.62 to beat her old PR by over nine seconds.
Â
Freshman
Jocelyn Reynolds was also running in her first 10,000-meter race as a Viking, and finished in 39:39.43. Junior
Maggie Coleman topped all women's runners in the combined 10,000 meters while finishing in 39:08.84, and fellow junior
Kennedy Martin placed right behind in second in 39:14.63. Sophomore
Justin Wikler also finished the men's side of the combined 10,000 meters in 33:21.63.
Â
The Vikings wrap the OSU High Performance Meet Saturday, with field events starting at 10 a.m. (PT), while running events start at 1 p.m. (PT).
