Settle Stays Hot with Second Straight PR in 200 to Lead Vikings at Triton Invitational

RESULTS - PDF | HTML

LA JOLLA, Calif. —
Junior Genna Settle belies her last name, as she just keeps getting faster.

A week after setting personal bests in the 100 and 200 meters at the Oregon Relays, Settle shaved close to a quarter of a second off her PR in the 200 again Saturday, finishing in 23.90 seconds at the Triton Invitational at the Triton Track & Field Stadium.

Settle's finish placed her as the top collegiate runner at the meet, and marked the first time the junior had ever ducked under 24 seconds in the outdoor 200 meters. Settle now stands second in the Big Sky in the 200 meters this season, behind only Weber State's Aaliyah Crawford, who lowered her own Big Sky-leading time to 23.81 seconds at the BYU Robison Invitational this weekend.

Settle wasn't alone in her strong performance Saturday, however, as the Vikings set or bettered several Big Sky qualifying marks at the Triton Invitational.

Settle's classmate, Roazena Miller, added a qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles for the Viking women, as she set a huge personal best in the event for the second straight week. Miller finished in a personal-best 1:01.85 Saturday, 1.25 seconds better than the PR of 1:03.12 she set a week earlier at the Oregon Relays.

Miller's PR jumps the junior from 10th all-time in the 400-meter hurdles at Portland State to fourth, and also jumps her up to sixth in the Big Sky in the event this season.

The Viking men's 800-meter duo of Spencer Russell and Ben Richardson, meanwhile, each ducked under 1:52 at the Triton Invitational, lowering the Big Sky qualifying times they had set in the event earlier in the season. Russell finished in 1:51.86 to Richardson's 1:51.95 Saturday, moving the pair of them to third and fourth, respectively, in the Big Sky this season.

Sophomore Nyalual Beng also set a new PR on the women's side of the 800 meters, as she came within a second of the Big Sky qualifying standard in the event with her finish in 2:12.83. Like Settle and Miller, Beng was coming off a PR in the 800 last week, but lowered it at a second straight meet Saturday, as her time beat the 2:13.75 she ran last week at the Oregon Relays by close to a full second.

Senior Kris Tollefson set a new seasonal best in the women's 800 meters as well, as she finished in 2:14.92 Saturday, more than a second better than her previous best this season of 2:16.10.

Sophomore ChaQuinn Cook also improved her Big Sky qualifying mark in the triple jump, as she won the event at the meet Saturday with a personal-best jump of 40-07.75 (12.39m). Cook's jump beat the 40-03.25 (12.27m) she jumped at the season-opening Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open, and narrowed the gap between her and Big Sky leader Samantha Evans of Montana, who leads the Big Sky with a jump of 42-00.75 (12.82m).

Sophomore Spenser Schmidt, meanwhile, ducked under 22 seconds in the men's 200 meters for the first time in his career Saturday, as he finished in 21.89 seconds. Schmidt's time in the 200 moved him into the all-time top 10 of the event at Portland State. Fellow sophomore Hunter Pfefferkorn also set a new personal best in the 200 meters Saturday, finishing in 22.15 to beat his prep personal best by close to a tenth of a second.

Schmidt set a new PSU personal best in the 100 meters as well, finishing in 10.80 seconds, one-hundredth of a second better than his previous best of 10.81. Schmidt has been remarkably consistent in the 100 meters this season, as his 100-meter times so far have been: 10.83, 10.81, 11.00, 10.82 and 10.80.

Junior Whitney Diggs also came within one-hundredth of a second of her seasonal best in the women's 400 meters, finishing in 55.18 seconds, just behind the 55.17 she ran at the Aztec Invitational on March 26. Diggs still ranks third in the Big Sky in the 400 meters this season off her time at the Aztec Invitational, after earning All-Big Sky honors in the indoor 400 meters in February.

Additionally, senior Sydney Johnson finished with her second-best mark of the season in the women's open discus, which took place Friday. Johnson finished with a mark of 145-10 (44.4m), less than a foot behind her seasonal best of 146-08.50 (44.71m), which she set at the John Knight Twilight two weekends ago.

The Vikings will now head into the final stretch of the regular season, as they compete at two final meets in Oregon over the next two weekends before heading down to the Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo., May 11-14. The Vikings compete at the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Ore., next Friday and Saturday, before wrapping the regular season at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Ore., on May 6.
