School Record in Women's 4x400 Leads Vikings at Competitive Mondo Mid-Major Team Challenge

RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
The Portland State women's 4x400-meter relay team broke the school record in the event to highlight a competition-filled Saturday, as the Vikings participated in a rare team-scored meet at the Mondo Mid-Major Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State University at Hornet Stadium.

The Vikings finished the 4x400 in 3:46.38, beating the previous school record of 3:46.96 the Vikings set at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships last season. Roazena Miller, Dejuanae Toliver, Genna Settle and Rachel Vinjamuri set the record for the Vikings, while the foursome also moved up to third in the Big Sky this season in the mile relay.

As a team, the Viking women finished fourth out of four teams with 96 points Saturday, while the Viking men placed third out of the three men's teams present with 44 points.

The competitive spirit of the team-scored meet still helped the Vikings pick up four Big Sky qualifying marks at the meet, however, and improved on two others.

Besides her role in the school relay record, Settle improved her qualifying times in both the 100 and 200 meters Saturday, finishing third and second, respectively. Settle shaved a hundredth of a second off her original qualifying time in the 100 meters, going down from 11.87 at last weekend's Aztec Invitational to 11.86. Settle shaved more time off in the 200, as she finished in 24.28 seconds Saturday, .17 seconds better than the time of 24.45 she ran at the season-opening Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open two weekends ago.

Fellow junior Akayla Anderson added another Big Sky qualifying standard for the Viking women, as she posted a huge improvement from a week ago while winning the 100-meter hurdles. Anderson finished in 14.55 seconds in her 2016 debut at the Aztec Invitational last week, but shaved more than a half a second off that time Saturday, finishing in 13.98 seconds. Anderson now leads the Big Sky in the 100-meter hurdles by .15 seconds, and leads the No. 3 team by a quarter of a second.

The rest of the Vikings' new Big Sky qualifying standards came on the men's side, as Mitchell Gable and Sheldon Prince each ducked under the qualifying standard in the men's 400 meters, while Rockwell Tufty cleared the standard in the men's high jump.

Gable and Prince picked up qualifying times in the 400 while finishing second and fifth in the event in 48.05 and 48.90 seconds, respectively. Gable's time marked a huge personal best for the junior, as he shaved more than half a second off his old best of 48.65 seconds, set at the 2014 Big Sky Outdoor Championships when Gable was a freshman. Gable's time also moved the junior up to third all-time in the outdoor 400 at Portland State, behind only Prince and Anthony Robinson, who set the school record at 47.38 seconds in 2003.

Tufty, meanwhile, cruised to a near-three-inch seasonal best in the high jump, as he cleared his first four heights on his first attempt and finished with a mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m).

Freshman Jean-Luc Toku came within a centimeter of giving the Viking men a fourth Big Sky qualifying standard, as he finished with a mark of 22-07.25 (6.89m) in the men's long jump, just off the qualifying standard of 6.90 meters.

Toku placed third in the long jump behind teammate Spenser Schmidt, who came within a quarter of an inch of winning the event on his final jump of the day. UC Davis' Cameron Edwards led the competition with a mark of 23-08.25 (7.22m) going into the final round, but Schmidt gave him a scare with his jump of 23-08.00 (7.21m). Schmidt has now cracked seven meters at two straight meet to start the outdoor season, and still leads the Big Sky in the event by over a foot.

Schmidt also finished second in the 100 meters in a PSU personal-best 10.81 seconds, and was the Vikings' top finisher in the 200 meters as well.

The Vikings also picked up three event wins besides Anderson's win in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday, including two for sophomore Ta'mara Richey, who swept the women's long jump and triple jump at the meet. Richey won the long jump by nearly a foot, as she broke 19 feet for the second time out of three meets this season with a mark of 19-02.00 (5.84m) Saturday.

The other event win for the Vikings came in the men's 4x100-meter relay, which Schmidt, Prince, Hunter Pfefferkorn and Gable won in 41.58 seconds for Portland State. The Vikings' winning time shaved two-tenths of a second off their time from the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open two weekends ago, and moved them up to seventh all-time in the event at Portland State.

Senior Sydney Johnson, meanwhile, posted a dramatic improvement in the discus, as she placed second while finishing with a 22-foot seasonal best of 144-10 (44.16m). Freshman thrower Raquel Pellecer also set an overall personal best in the javelin, finishing with a mark of 135-08 (41.35m) to move up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State. Pellecer has improved her marks at each meet this season so far, and now ranks ninth in the Big Sky in the javelin.

The Vikings will head back to the state of Oregon for their next meet, as they head to Monmouth, Ore., for the John Knight Twilight meet next Saturday.
