DAY ONE RECAP

EUGENE, Ore. —
Junior Genna Settle blew away the field in the 100 meters, as the sprinter increased her Big Sky lead in the short sprint with a big seasonal best on the second straight day of the Oregon Relays Saturday.

Settle won the 100 in 11.70 seconds, .07 seconds faster than the No. 2 runner in the event Saturday, Oregon State's Kerissa D'Arpino, and .16 seconds better than her previous best this season of 11.86. Settle now leads the Big Sky in the 100 by more than three-tenths of a second, and remains the only sprinter in the conference to crack 12 seconds in the 100 this season.

Settle's time in the 100 also tied her personal best in the event, and gave her a seasonal best for the second straight day after finishing the 200 in 24.14 seconds Friday, .14 seconds better than her previous seasonal best of 24.28 in the event.

A number of other Vikings set seasonal bests Saturday as well, including fellow junior Akayla Anderson, who increased her own Big Sky lead in the 100-meter hurdles with a seasonal-best finish of 13.96 seconds. Like Settle, Anderson remains the only runner in the Big Sky to crack a certain time in her event, as she's still the only one to dip under 14 seconds in the 100 hurdles, and she's done it at two of the three meets in which she's competed in the short hurdles this season.

Senior Kevin Robinson and junior Roazena Miller also set new seasonal bests in their own hurdle events Saturday. Robinson cracked 15 seconds for the first time in his career in the men's 110-meter hurdles, as he finished in 14.98 seconds, moving him up to eighth in the Big Sky in the event this season. Miller, meanwhile, finished the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.12, moving her up to seventh in the Big Sky this season.

Sophomore Hunter Pfefferkorn also added another Big Sky qualifying mark for the Vikings with an overall personal best in the 400 meters, as he finished in 48.66 seconds. The Vikings now have three runners with qualifying marks in the men's 400 this season, as Pfefferkorn joins Mitchell Gable – who also ran the 400 in 48.47 seconds Saturday – and senior Sheldon Prince with the conference standard. Pfefferkorn also joined Prince and Gable in the all-time top 10 in the 400 at Portland State with his time Saturday, as Prince, Gable and Pfefferkorn now rank second, third and eighth all-time in the event, respectively.

Sophomore Nyalual Beng also set a personal best in the women's 800 meters for a second time this season, as she ducked under 2:14 in the 800 for the first time in her career with her finish in 2:13.75. Senior Kris Tollefson also matched her seasonal best in the 800, as she finished in 2:16.10 for a second time this season.

Sophomore Spenser Schmidt nearly matched his seasonal best in the 100 meters as well, as he finished in 10.82 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off his 2016 best of 10.81.

Freshman ChaQuinn Cook also cracked 12 meters in the women's triple jump for the second time this season, as she finished fourth in the event with a mark of 39-10.00 (12.14m). Cook, the 2016 Big Sky indoor champion, ranks second in the Big Sky in the triple jump off her mark of 40-03.25 (12.27m) at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open at the start of the season.

The Vikings will now head out of the state of Oregon for their next meet, as they head to San Diego, Calif., for the Triton Invitational, April 22-23, hosted by the University of San Diego.
