SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Senior Amanda Boman solidified herself as one of the best distance runners in the Big Sky Conference Friday, as she took over the conference lead in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:14.14 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival at Cox Stadium.
 
Boman now ranks in the top five of the Big Sky in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, after earning All-Big Sky honors with a 10th-place finish at the conference cross country meet in the fall.
 
Boman placed second in the 10,000 meters Friday, narrowly missing out on an event win as Kristen Rohde of High Performance West finished just over a second ahead of Boman in 35:13.12. Boman still finished as the top collegiate runner by over seven seconds, however, and moved up to fourth all-time in the 10,000 meters at Portland State with her time Friday.
 
Boman's time also gave her the Big Sky qualifying standard in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and two of her Vikings teammates joined her with 10,000-meter qualifying times of their own Friday.
 
Redshirt freshman Sarah Medved and junior Cheryn Trapp joined Boman in hitting the qualifying standard in the 10,000 meters, as they finished in 36:13.69 and 37:08.87, respectively. Both Medved and Trapp also joined Boman in the top 10 all-time in the 10,000 meters at Portland State with their times Friday, as Medved slid into seventh-place all-time with her time in the event, while Trapp moved into 10th all-time.
 
Senior Spencer Russell already had a Big Sky qualifying time in the 800 meters, but lowered it Friday, as he finished in 1:52.88, his best finish ever as a Viking.
 
Junior Ben Richardson leads the Big Sky in the men's 800 meters this season, but made his 2016 debut in the 1,500 meters Friday, and finished with a time of 3:54.63. Richardson's time was more than a second off his personal best of 3:53.22 –set at the Portland Track Festival at the end of last season – but still moved him into the top 10 within the Big Sky this season.
 
Sophomore Nyalual Beng and senior Kris Tollefson also entered the top 10 in the Big Sky in the women's 800 meters, as they made their 2016 outdoor debuts at the distance with finishes of 2:14.02 and 2:16.10, respectively. Beng's time marks a half-second personal best in the 800 meters for the sophomore, beating her previous best of 2:14.47 that she set at the Mt. Hood Track Festival at the end of last season.
 
Freshman Jocelyn Reynolds, meanwhile, posted a huge personal improvement in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 18:48.09 to shave more than 51 seconds off her time of 19:39.20 two weekends ago at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. Sophomore Justin Wikler also shaved 10 seconds off his personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing in 33:11.18 to beat his previous best of 33:21.96, set at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker at the start of last season.
 
The Vikings' distance crew will now turn its attention to the John Knight Twilight, April 9, in Monmouth, Ore., while the rest of the Vikings compete at the Mondo Mid-Major Team Challenge Saturday in Sacramento, Calif. Field events start at 10 a.m. (PT) at the Mondo meet, while running events start with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 11:45 a.m. (PT).
