CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Three freshmen made impressive debuts for the Portland State track & field team in the throws Friday, as the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open kicked off with the men's and women's javelin and hammer competitions at Clackamas Community College.
Â
Maddie Buss and
Raquel Pellecer competed for the Vikings in the women's javelin, and both opened their Portland State careers with marks that rank them among the top 10 all-time in school history.
Â
Buss finished the event with a mark of 126-10 (38.65m), not enough to beat her prep personal best of 129-00 (39.30m), but still enough to rank her ninth all-time at Portland State. Pellecer also didn't beat her prep personal best, but moved up to 10th all-time at PSU in the javelin with her mark of 126-02.50 (38.46m). Sophomore
Shasta Wilson competed in the javelin as well, finishing with a mark of 108-05.50 (33.05m).
Â
Buss' and Pellecer's freshmen classmate
Tyler Dent, meanwhile, made his debut in the men's hammer with a throw of 157-00.50 (47.86m), good enough to rank him fifth all-time in the event at Portland State after the first outdoor meet of his collegiate career. Dent finished eighth overall in the hammer Friday, and was the only athlete to advance to the finals of the event out of the first flight.
Â
The rest of the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open concludes tomorrow, as the meet moves to the Eldon Fix Track on the Lewis & Clark campus in Portland, Ore. Field events start at 9 a.m. (PT), while track events start at 11 a.m. (PT).
