SEATTLE, Wash. — Sophomore sprinter
Spenser Schmidt ran a personal best in the 200 meters to lead the Portland State track & field team as the Vikings opened the Husky Classic Friday at the Dempsey Indoor facility.

Schmidt finished the 200 in 22.35 seconds, shaving .04 seconds off the 22.39 he ran at the Bronco Invitational on Jan. 23, and giving him sole possession of seventh place all-time in the indoor 200 at Portland State.

Sarah Medved and
Alex Cisneros also made their PSU debuts in the indoor 5,000 meters at the meet, and put themselves in contention to qualify for the Big Sky meet in the event. Cisneros finished the men's 5,000 meters in 14:57.77, ranking him 14th in the Big Sky in the event this season. Medved, meanwhile, finished the women's 5,000 meters in 17:55.84, moving her to 17th in the Big Sky Conference this season.

The Husky Classic and UW Indoor Open Sunday mark the end of the indoor regular season for the Vikings, as they prepare for the Big Sky Championships Feb. 25-27 in Bozeman, Mont. The Vikings will continue at the Husky Classic Saturday, starting with the prelims of the women's 60-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. (PT).
