PORTLAND, Ore. —
Senior multi-event athlete Kevin Robinson set heptathlon personal bests in three of the four events Friday as he and the Portland State track & field team opened competition at the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.

Robinson finished the first day of the heptathlon 15th overall with 2,623 points, just under 100 points more than his first-day total at the Ed Jacoby Invitational two weeks ago, when he finished the first day with 2,525 points.

Robinson jumped ahead of his pace at the Ed Jacoby Invitational from the get-go, as he finished the 60 meters in a personal-best 7.46 seconds, putting him 29 points up after just the first event.

Robinson's best mark of the day came in the long jump, however, as he improved by over a foot in the event, jumping 21-00.50 (6.41m) Friday, well past the 19-11.00 (6.07m) he jumped at the Ed Jacoby Invitational.

Robinson then extended his lead over his own pace further in the shot put, throwing 32-00.25 (9.76m), almost eight inches better than the 31-04.50 (9.56m) he threw in the shot put at the Ed Jacoby Invitational.

Robinson was 116 points ahead of his pace at that point, but gave some back in the final event of the day, the high jump, as he couldn't match the personal best he set of 6-05.25 (1.96m) in the event at the Ed Jacoby Invitational. Robinson still cleared 6-04.25 (1.94m), however, giving him 749 points in the event to round out his first-day total at 2,623.

Robinson will resume the heptathlon at 10:05 a.m. tomorrow with the 60-meter hurdles, while the pole vault and 1,000 meters will follow at around 11:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., respectively.

The Vikings also had athletes competing in the men's and women's 200 meters Friday, with Genna Settle (9th, 25.04), Whitney Diggs (21st, 25.44) and Rachel Vinjamuri (22nd, 25.59) competing for the women, and Spenser Schmidt (27th, 22.76) and Mitchell Gable (33rd, 22.97) competing for the men.

The Vikings will get back underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the women's long jump, while track events get started with the qualifying heats of the men's 60 meters at 10:49 a.m.
