NAMPA, Idaho — These kids are alright.
Freshmen triple jumpers
Jean-Luc Toku and
ChaQuinn Cook shined for the Portland State track & field team, as the pair each hit the Big Sky auto qualifying marks in the men's and women's triple jump.
Toku surpassed 47 feet in the men's triple jump, finishing with a mark of 47-00.75 (14.34m). Toku's jump beats his outdoor prep personal best by over a foot, and moves him up to third all-time in the event at Portland State, just one meet into his collegiate career. Toku also inserted himself into the conference picture with his jump Saturday, as his mark moved him to fourth in the Big Sky in the triple jump this season.
Cook, meanwhile, took over the Big Sky lead in the women's triple jump with her mark of 38-00.25 (11.59m) Saturday. Cook showed vast improvement over last week with her mark at the Bronco Invitational, as she jumped over a foot farther than she did at the UW Indoor Preview last Saturday.
Besides the two triple jumpers, junior sprinter
Genna Settle also had a strong day on the track, as she hit the Big Sky auto mark in the 200 meters, and won the finals of the 60 meters over Boise State's Chassity Love.
Settle finished second to Love in the 200 meters, but ducked under the Big Sky qualifying time in the event with her finish in 24.48 seconds. That time moves Settle up to second in the Big Sky this season, behind only North Dakota's Natasha Brown, who set the conference-leading time at 24.39 seconds at the Bison Classic last week.
Settle also nearly hit the qualifying mark in the 60 meters, as her time of 7.67 seconds in the finals fell just .02 seconds short of meeting the standard. Settle still posted a dominant day in the event, however, as she had the top qualifying time of anybody in the preliminary heats, and then won the event over Love in the finals.
Saturday's meet also afforded several members of the Vikings' distance crew their chance to make their debut, and nobody did it better than redshirt freshman
Alex Cisneros, who placed second in the 3,000 meters in 8:33.15. That time moves Cisneros up to seventh all-time in the event after only one race at Portland State, and ranks him in the top 10 in the event within the Big Sky this season.
Redshirt freshman
Sarah Medved and true freshman
Jocelyn Reynolds also made their PSU debuts in the women's 3,000 meters, and finished in 10:31.54 and 11:11.63, respectively.
Additionally, freshmen
Kaila Ann Gibson and
Nevina De Luca made their PSU debuts in the women's mile, finishing in 5:19.19 and 5:29.69, respectively.
Junior
Ben Richardson also shaved three seconds off his personal best while placing second overall in the men's mile, crossing the line in 4:20.13.
Outside of the distance crew, freshman sprinter
Rachel Vinjamuri led the Vikings in the women's 400 meters for the second straight week, as she saved a few ticks off the personal best she set last week, and also set a new personal best in the indoor 200 meters. Vinjamuri finished the 400 in 57.28 seconds, moving her up to fifth in the conference in the event, and followed it up with her time of 25.37 seconds in the 200 meters.
Junior
Roazena Miller had the more impressive personal performance in the 400 meters, however, as she shaved close to two full seconds off her previous personal best in the event, finishing in 57.92 seconds to blow away her old best of 59.57 seconds. Miller now ranks 10th all-time in the 400 meters at Portland State, and ranks in the top 10 in the conference for the first time this season.
Sophomore
Spenser Schmidt also beat his personal best in the men's 200 meters, finishing in 22.39 seconds, while senior heptathlete
Kevin Robinson set a new personal best in the men's 60-meter hurdles while finishing in 8.53 seconds.
The Vikings will now move onto the UW Invitational, Jan. 29-30, at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle, Wash., which will mark the midway point of the indoor regular season for the Vikings.
