FRIDAY RESULTS - PDF | HTML
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior
Jasmine Woods nearly matched her record time in the 100 meters from a day ago while giving the Portland State women's track and field team its second national qualifier – a first in program history – at the NCAA West Preliminary Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Running in the first heat of the quarterfinals of the 100 meters, Woods crossed the line in 11.36 seconds, just a hundredth of a second off her time of 11.35 seconds that broke the Portland State and Big Sky Conference records in the first round of the event Thursday.
Woods still had to sweat out her qualification, however, as her time only placed her fourth in her heat, with only the top three in each heat assured of advancing to nationals. The next three-best times at the end of the quarterfinal heats would then advance after that, leaving Woods vulnerable if runners in subsequent heats posted faster times. Woods' time stood up over the two subsequent quarterfinal heats, though, advancing the senior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 10-13.
Woods' qualification follows sophomore
Baileh Simms' qualification in the women's long jump Thursday, giving the Vikings two national qualifiers in the same season for the first time in program history.
The Vikings still have the chance for more qualifiers, too, as sophomore
CeCelia Jackson advanced to the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles Friday. Jackson made it through the first round on time, as she placed 20th overall while setting a new personal best by a tenth of a second. Jackson finished the 100-meter hurdles in 13.43 seconds Friday, beating the 13.53 she ran at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships last season.
Jackson will now race in the quarterfinals as the NCAA West Preliminary concludes Saturday. The quarterfinals start at 7:05 p.m. (CT), with the top three in each heat automatically qualifying for the national meet, while the next three-best times also advance.
Senior
Jazmin Ratcliff nearly gave the Vikings another runner in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles, but finished as the first non-qualifier while finishing sixth in her heat in 13.53 seconds. The performance unfortunately ends Ratcliff's standout hurdles career at Portland State that included three Big Sky titles between two outdoor 100-meter hurdles titles, and one indoor 60-meter hurdles title.
Woods also returned to the track for the first round of the 200 meters later in the day Friday, but failed to advance despite tying a seasonal best with her time of 23.92 seconds.
Both Ratcliff and Woods will have another chance to advance to nationals, however, as they will each run legs on the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay that runs in the quarterfinals of the event at 6 p.m. (CT) Saturday. That will open the final day of the regional meet for the Vikings, while Jackson's run in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles follows an hour later at 7:05 p.m. (CT).
