EUGENE, Ore. — Juniors
Major Oni and
T-Roy Brown set historic marks in the hammer and 1,500 meters, respectively, Friday, as they led the Portland State track and field teams at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.
Â
Oni threw the hammer 163-02 (49.74m) Friday, giving him the Vikings' best mark in the event in over 40 years. Oni's mark ranks second only to Steve James' school record of 176-00 (53.64m), which James set way back in 1971. Additionally, Oni has now set personal bests in the hammer in each of the past two weeks, as the junior has raised his mark in the hammer by over nine feet this season.
Â
Brown, meanwhile, ran the fastest men's 1,500-meter time within the Portland State program in over 10 years, as he finished the invitational section of the men's 1,500 meters in 3:51.25. Brown's time represents the best time by a Viking since Mike Kebbe ran the 1,500 meters in 3:50.40 in 2004. Brown's time also moves him all the way up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State, as well as fifth in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Brown's historic time led a strong day overall for the Viking men's distance crew, as the Vikings also recorded three more personal bests between the 'B' sections of the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.
Â
Sophomore
Ben Richardson shaved more than 2.5 seconds off his old personal best in the 1,500 meters, as he finished third in the 'B' section of the event in 3:56.30. Freshman
Jacob Hicks also set a new personal best in the 1,500 with his time of 4:07.49, while senior
Andrew Landstrom followed with a near-six-second personal best in the 5,000 meters. Landstrom finished the 5,000 meters in 15:14.04, well ahead of the 15:19.98 he ran at the John Knight Twilight meet last week.
Â
Meanwhile, in the women's distances, freshman
Nyalual Beng set a new personal best in the 800 meters, finishing the 'B' section of the event in 2:18.12 to place fourth overall.
Â
Senior
Camelia Mayfield also hit the Big Sky qualifying mark while setting a new personal best in the women's 5,000 meters Friday. Mayfield finished the 5,000 in 16:58.50, moving her up to eighth in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Outside of the distances, junior
Rockwell Tufty and freshman
Spenser Schmidt also set new Big Sky qualifying marks in the high jump and long jump, respectively.
Â
Tufty, who set the school record in the outdoor high jump last season, set a seasonal best in the event with a jump of 6-08.75 (2.05m) at the meet Friday. Tufty set the mark while only missing on two jumps through the first three heights he attempted. Tufty took three attempts at 6-09.75 (2.08m), too, the same height he cleared when he set the record at the Big Sky Championships last season. Additionally, Tufty's mark Friday moves him up to fourth in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Schmidt, meanwhile, set a seasonal best on his first attempt of the day in the long jump, jumping 22-08.50 (6.92m) to move up to eighth in the Big Sky this season.
Additionally, junior
Sheldon Prince set a seasonal best in the men's 200 meters, as he cracked 22 seconds for the first time this season with his time of 21.83 seconds.
Â
The Vikings continue competition at the Oregon Relays Saturday, starting with the men's 4x100-meter relay at 12:35 p.m. (PT).
