SEATTLE, Wash. — Sophomore
Cheryn Trapp hit the Big Sky qualifying mark in the women's 5,000 meters with a huge personal best in the event Friday, as the Portland State track and field teams opened competition at the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
Â
Trapp finished the 5,000 in 17:30.18, beating the qualifying mark of 17:40.00 by close to ten full seconds. Trapp's mark also beats her old personal best in the indoor 5,000 by over 14 seconds, and cross qualifies her for the Big Sky meet in the 3,000 meters.
Â
The Viking women now have 10 athletes qualified for the Big Sky meet across 15 different events, with just under two weeks until the Big Sky Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Feb. 26-28.
Â
Sophomore
Maggie Coleman was also shooting for the Big Sky qualifying mark in the 5,000 Friday, but missed out on the mark with her time of 18:01.75. However, Coleman ranked 15th in the Big Sky in the 5,000 going into the weekend, putting her right on the cusp of qualifying for the Big Sky meet even without the auto mark.
Â
Outside of the 5,000, the Vikings also had runners compete on both sides of the 200 meters Friday. Senior
Jasmine Woods tied her personal best on the women's side of the event, as she crossed the line in 24.78 seconds, a week after finishing in the exact same time at the Scarlet & White Invitational in Boston.
Â
Junior
Sheldon Prince, meanwhile, finished the men's 200 meters in 22.11 seconds, tying his second-best time in the event this season. Prince entered the weekend fourth in the Big Sky in the men's 200 meters after hitting the Big Sky qualifying mark in the event last week with his time of 21.94 seconds at the Scarlet & White Invitational.
Â
The Vikings will continue competition at the Husky Classic Saturday, as they open the second day of the meet at 10 a.m. (PT) with the women's long jump.
