STANFORD, Calif. — The Portland State men's tennis team rolled through the consolation draws at the ITA Northwest Regional Saturday, as the team competed at the second day of the tournament at the Taube Tennis Center.
Â
The Vikings' lone doubles team left in the main draw, senior
Stuart Tierney and junior
Matt Pronesti, received a walkover to the round of 16 Saturday, leaving the players in the consolation draws the room to shine.
Â
The Vikings won two of their three doubles matches in the consolation draw Saturday, and then followed it up with two wins in the consolation singles draw.
Â
"Our doubles teams were very strong again today," PSU head coach
Toby Krauel said. "We were also very strong individual in singles, as Pronesti had a great win over a strong Sacramento State player, and Brent took out another conference rival, beating a player from Eastern Washington."
Â
Senior
Brent Wheeler and junior
Ian Risenhoover opened the Vikings' strong showing in doubles with a solid, 8-4 win over Gonzaga's Joey Brandt and Valdimir Mijatovic in the first round of the consolation draw.
Â
Junior
Wil Cochrane and sophomore
Ethan Lopez also won in the first round of the consolation doubles draw Saturday, as they pulled out a tiebreaker to beat Saint Mary's Samuel Bloore and Matthew Campana 8-7 (4).
Â
Sophomores
Jonathan Pike and
Nacor Ibanez played a tight doubles match against UC Davis's Eli Whittle and Everett Maltby as well, but ultimately fell 8-6.
Â
Wheeler, meanwhile, posted a dominant win in singles, beating Eastern Washington's Stefan Farrar 6-2, 6-3 to advance in the consolation draw.
Â
Pronesti also advanced Saturday after dominating a super tiebreaker in his match against Sacramento State's Kasparas Zemaitelis. Pronesti beat Zemaitelis 10-1 in the super tiebreaker to give him a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (1) win over his conference rival.
Â
Pronesti's win in a super tiebreaker helped the Vikings get past losses in a couple others Saturday, as both Tierney and Ibanez lost in super tiebreakers in their first-round matches in the consolation draw.
Â
Tierney lost a super tiebreaker to the University of the Pacific's Alex Hamilton after rallying back to level the set with a 6-2 win in the second. Hamilton, however, recovered from his second-set loss to top Tierney 10-5 in the super tiebreaker, giving him the 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (5) match win.
Â
Ibanez, meanwhile, lost his match to Gonzaga's Joey Brandt in a super tiebreaker after Brandt leveled the match with a tiebreaker win in the second set. Ibanez went up initially in the match with a 6-1 win in the first set, but then lost a tough second-set tiebreaker 7-4 to move the match into the super tiebreaker. Ibanez rallied to challenge Brandt in the super tiebreaker, but Brandt had the momentum at the point and won the super tiebreaker 10-5 to take the match 1-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (5).
Â
Cochrane also competed in the first round of the consolation singles draw Saturday, but lost 6-1, 6-3 to the University of the Pacific's Ashwin Sharma.
Â
The Vikings will now have a busy day tomorrow with several players still in action, including Tierney and Pronesti, who will face a seeded team in their round of 16 doubles match against Thomas Fawcett and John Morrissey of Stanford. The match will start at 10 a.m (PT) and be streamed live online at

Â
Fawcett and Morrissey have yet to play a match in the tournament, as they received a bye into the second round as one of the tournament seeds, then walked over into the round of 16 after their opponents withdrew due to an injury.
Â
The quarterfinals of the consolation draw will also be played Sunday. Cochrane and Lopez will play Brent Chin and Alex Marcinkowski of Oregon in the quarterfinals, after Chin and Marcinkowski rolled to an 8-1 win over a team from the University of San Francisco Saturday.
Â
Wheeler and Risenhoover will also face off against the team that beat Pike and Ibanez in the first round, as they play Whittle and Maltby in the quarterfinals.
Â
Additionally, Wheeler will face Sharma in the second round of the consolation singles draw Sunday, while Pronesti will face the University of Portland's Mathieu Garcia.
