Four of Portland State Athletics' 15 programs have received perfect Academic Progress Rates (APR) with the release of scores today by the NCAA for the nation's Division I schools.
None of the programs had sub-standard APR scores that would place them under NCAA restrictions. Portland State's average team score was 966 (out of a possible 1,000).
In 2011-12, PSU's teams receiving perfect scores of 1,000 included women's basketball, men's tennis, women's cross country and golf. Men's tennis has achieved the perfect 1,000 score three straight years.
The NCAA's report also revealed PSU programs with the highest multi-year APR rates (2008-12): women's golf (991), men's tennis (982), volleyball (976) and women's basketball (979). The football program achieved its highest APR score (951) since the NCAA instituted Academic Progress Rate beginning in 2004-05.
APR INFORMATION
· The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
· The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.
· The Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face sanctions.
· The goal of the NCAA's academic performance program is improvement, not punishment. Not only does the program ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but also it provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
· Every team posting an APR score below 930 is required to develop a specific academic improvement plan. Teams posting APR scores below 900 must submit those plans to the NCAA national office for review.
