FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Sophomore
Megan Govi tied the program record for regular season wins set by Leinani McAneney in 1998, recording her 12
th victory, as the Portland State women's tennis team dominated the Valparaiso Crusaders in Flagstaff, Ariz., 7-0, Saturday morning. The Viks went a perfect 9-0 between singles and doubles improving to 8-8 overall.
Portland State looked strong in doubles appearing to be well-adjusted to the nearly 7,000-foot elevation.
The No. 3 team of
Kelsey Frey and
Megan Govi got the Viks rolling as they cruised to their fifth win as a pairing, downing Lauren Kammerer and Angelina Goheen, with a perfect 8-0 score to make it 1-0, Viks.
On court No. 2 the tandem of
Marti Pellicano and
Mandy Mallen stormed back from a 4-2 deficit and only allowed Kaitlyn Hamel and Megan Barthels to tally one more game as they clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory.
On court No. 1,
Nayanatara Vadali and
Marina Todd had another comeback in the making as the Portland State duo came back from being down 4-1, defeating Kristin Zakiewicz, Michele Fredlake, 9-7, to sweep the doubles matches.
In singles play the PSU left little doubt striking early and often.
Govi was the first to increase the Viking lead, cruising to her 12
th win of the year, defeating Barthels, 6-1, 6-0. The San Rafael, Calif., native is the third person in program history to record double digit wins in singles play and the second to tie the all-time best mark of 12 victories, which was last done by Yuki Sugiyama in 2011.
Alexa McDonald followed suit working efficiently from No. 6 spot, defeating Krammerer, 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 7-6 overall this season.
Pellicano became the fourth-member of the “double-digit singles wins club” as she earned her 10
th of the season from the No. 5 position, defeating Goheen, 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the match for Portland State.
The Viks kept the wins coming however as Frey inched closer to that 10-win plateau, making quick work of Fredlake, 6-2, 6-1, earning her eighth win of the year and increasing PSU's lead to 5-0.
Mallen got her first win from the No. 1 spot against a division I school as she came back from being down 3-0 in the first set to reeling off 12-straight games, and defeating Zackiewicz, 6-3, 6-0.
Todd put the icing on the cake for the Portland State victory edging Hamel, in a tight first set 7-6 (2), and then taking control of the momentum to win in the second frame, 6-3, giving the Viks the 7-0 sweep.
Portland State will conclude its three-match road swing on Sunday morning as they take on conference foe, Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. The match time is slated for 9 a.m. PST. Live stats are available at
