VANCOUVER, Wash. – Despite a new-looking singles roster due to injuries,
Stratton Gilmore recorded his third singles win from the No. 1 position on Monday, but that was the only point scored for Portland State, as the Viks fell to UC Davis, 6-1, in Vancouver, Wash., on Monday afternoon. With the loss the Viks stand at 2-4 and 0-1 in the Big Sky.
In doubles play the Aggies rolled through the pairing of
Lukas Kortus and
Brent Wheeler, 8-4 and took an early 1-0 lead.
The No. 2 tandem of Connor and
Stratton Gilmore made it interesting against Parker Kelly and Alec Haley, clawing back from, 4-0, and 5-2 deficits to even up their match at 5-5.
On court No. 1, the pairing of
Antoine Bechmann and
Abhinav Mishra were in a battle of their own, trading points with Toki Sherbakov and Adam Levie.
Despite knotting up their match, 5-5, the Gilmore brothers weren't able to upset their opponents and were defeated, 8-5.
Because of the already decided doubles point, Bechmann and Mishra were forced to halt their match, despite the tied, 7-7 score.
In singles play the Aggies continued to their success starting with court three, as Kelly made quick work of Kortus, 6-1, 6-1, pushing the UC Davis lead to 2-0.
Wil Cochrane fought hard in the first set, but fell 6-3 and was quickly bested in the second by Haley, 6-0, giving the Aggies a 3-0 lead.
On court two,
Connor Gilmore was entrenched in a battled with Miller, dropping a hard fought first frame, 6-3. In the second it was Gilmore who jumped out to the early lead but Miller found points in key spots and dispatched his Viking opponent in the second set, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Aggies.
Stratton Gilmore turned in the grittiest performance of the afternoon edging Sherbakov in the first set, 7-6 (8-6) and continued that momentum into the second frame, winning 6-4, and giving the Viks their first win of the match.
Brent Wheeler did some fighting of his own on court four as the sophomore took the first set against Brett Bacharach, 6-2. Bacharach, gained traction in the second set as he grinded out a 6-4 victory. In the tiebreaker, Wheeler fought hard but eventually fell, 7-5 to give the match to the Aggies.
Zach Lubek faced George Horowitz in the No. 6 spot and was upended, 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets.
The Viks will be in action next weekend when it hosts George Fox and Lewis & Clark College on Feb. 9 and 10. Match times are slated for 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
