Portland State football has signed two more student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for 2013; wide receiver Anthony Jenkins from Poteet High School in Mesquite, TX and linebacker Kalei Kauha'aha'a (CALL-ay COW-ha-a-ha-a) of Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, UT. That brings PSU's signing class to 23 for 2013.
Jenkins is a 6-foot, 175-pounder who will compete for playing time at a question mark position for the Vikings in 2013. PSU's starting wideouts, Justin Monahan and Nevin Lewis, were both seniors in 2012, exhausting their eligibility, and making the competition for playing time wide open.
"When you watch him on film, he is extremely athletic, explosive and catches the ball well. What you notice is how hard he plays. That is something that is tough to teach, but it is something that Kalei has - how he plays and his passion for the game," said Viking Head Coach Nigel Burton.
Kauha'aha'a attends Juan Diego Catholic HS where he competes in football and baseball. Kauha'aha'a is a 5-11, 225-pounder, who had 101 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four interceptions as a senior in 2012.
Kalei was originally committed to Utah State, but opened up his recruitment and looked at Portland State and New Mexico State.
"I think because of our family atmosphere, and the history of our program with Polynesian players, it made a difference to him," said Burton. "We saw a guy who we really believe has an opportunity to play as a true freshman. He is that skilled of a player, so we are extremely excited to have him."
Kauha'aha'a's father, Chad, is an assistant football coach at the University of Wisconsin, and worked previously at Utah, Utah State and Weber State.
