OGDEN, Utah – Despite another close doubles contest, Portland State (4-5, 0-3) failed to come up with a win in singles competition as the Weber State Wildcats downed the Viks, 7-0, in Ogden Utah on Saturday morning. The loss drops PSU to 0-3 in the Big Sky.
Portland State tried to send a message early, facing what is widely considered one of the top doubles teams in the conference, by opening up a sizeable lead on court No. 1, featuring
Abhinav Mishra and
Antoine Bechmann and remaining close on court No. 3.
The Wildcats drew first blood in the doubles point however, as the team of Sanjay Goswami and Todd Fought made quick work of
Brent Wheeler and
Ian Risenhoover, winning 8-3, going up 1-0.
Portland State proved to be more competitive in the final two matches as Mishra and Bechmann opened up a 5-2 lead against Caio Poitena and Oliver Good, while the reunited duo of
Connor Gilmore and
Stratton Gilmore evened things up at 5-5.
On court No. 1 the Wildcat tandem began to find momentum, evening the match up and eventually taking the lead, 7-6. Mishra and Bechmann hung tough but were eventually defeated to the tune of 8-6. This was the first time this season that this specific Vikings tandem had been beat, falling to 4-1 overall in dual matches and 2-1 in Big Sky play.
On the final court the Gilmore brothers were in a battle with Anthony Trabert and Ryan Garner, as the match entered a tiebreaker at 8-8. As was the case on court No. 1, Connor and
Stratton Gilmore traded points with the Wildcats, but were eventually edged, by a final score of 9-8 (7).
With Weber State up 1-0, the Wildcats didn't let their feet off the gas, making it 2-0 in the No. 2 position, as Fought downed
Wil Cochrane, 6-1, 6-2.
The next Viking to fall was
Stratton Gilmore who lost to Good 6-3, 6-2, as the Wildcats improved its advantage to 3-0.
The match was clinched on court No. 5 as Goswami outlasted Wheeler, defeating the sophomore 6-3, 6-2, to take the 4-0 lead.
Connor Gilmore fell to Poitena at the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 6-3, while
Lukas Kortus showed a spark to his game coming back from a first set, 6-2 loss, against Garner at No. 6, to win the second by the same margin. In the third frame the Wildcats senior bested Kortus, 6-1, to take the match.
On what was maybe the most intriguing singles match of the day for Portland State, Bechmann was entrenched in a heated battle with Jakub Gewert. Bechmann fought to a 6-4 first set win but was bested in the second stanza, 6-3. In a contentious 10-point tiebreaker Bechmann came up short to the tune of 10-6 to give the Wildcats the clean sweep for the match.
The Viks will next be in action next Saturday when they return home to the friendly confines of Club Green Meadows to take on the Idaho Vandals. The match is slated for 6 p.m.
