Men’s Tennis Completes Day One at EWU Classic

CHENEY, Wash. – The Portland State men's tennis team tallied a pair of opening-round singles victories at the EWU Classic held in Cheney, Wash., on Friday. Freshman Lukas Kortus and Junior Abhinav Mishra tallied impressive opening round wins before falling in the round of 16.

The duo got things off to a strong start for PSU in 2012 as Kortus defeated Seattle University's Flavius Malgutti in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile Mishra downed Eastern Washington's Lalo Martinez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Sean Sullivan also advanced to the second round due to injury but like Kortus and Mishra, fell in the round of 16.

Portland State stacks up nicely in the consolation brackets as both, freshman Brent Wheeler and sophomore Alex Marx will compete in the second round of the Red Flight consolation tournament, while senior Zach Lubek, sophomore Nate Chart, freshmen Dillon Triance and Will Cochrane have all advanced to the quarterfinal round of the White Flight consolation bracket. Freshman William Risenhoover and Sullivan will also compete in White Flight consolation matches as the duo will have matchups in the bracket's second round.

Check back tomorrow night for tomorrow's update to see how your Portland State Viking competitors have fared in day two of the EWU Classic.
