Portland State Men's Tennis Garners ITA Academic Team and Individual Awards

PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second-straight year the Portland State men's tennis team has garnered ITA All-Academic team honors for its work in the classroom. In addition to the team award, Zach Lubek and Roman Margoulis '12 received individual ITA academic honors.

Portland State was one of 79 teams across the country to earn the academic recognition while only PSU and Idaho State represented the Big Sky. Likewise Lubek and Margoulis were two of seven players from the conference to receive the accolades, as the Bengals had three players honored, while Sacramento State had two representatives.

“I am very proud of the strong commitment our team has to performing well academically,” head coach Jay Sterling said. “Our athletes are very fortunate to have outstanding professors here at Portland State, and an excellent student-athlete support staff to help them in reaching their academic goals.”

This is the second-straight year the men's team has received the national honor, while it's Margoulis' second individual award.

In order to qualify for ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

“As a coaching staff we take the “student” part of “student-athlete” very seriously and we expect all of our players to do the same,” Sterling said. “They work hard to balance the rigors of weights, practice, matches and school and deserve the recognition that they've received from the ITA.”
