Oro Valley, AZ - Led by
Britney Yada and
Kelly Miller, the Portland State golf team had a vastly improved performance on day two of the Wildcat Invitational, cutting their team score by a remarkable 24 shots from day one.
The Vikings shot 308 on Monday, as Yada fired a one-over par 73, and Miller posted a PSU personal-best, four-over par 76. Yada had three birdies and Miller two in the second round.
PSU moved up two positions on the leaderboard from 14th to 12th overall with one round to play at Vistoso Golf Club. The Vikings are at 332-308=640, ahead of New Mexico State and Northern Arizona in the 14-team field.
Host Arizona continued its blistering play, shooting an amazing 14-under par 274 as a team on Monday. That gives the 22nd-ranked Wildcats (285-274=559) a 13-shot lead over number-one ranked UCLA (289-283=572). Eighth-ranked Arizona State is 28 shots behind at 587 through 36 holes.
Arizona's Manon Gidali, now 11-under par, has a six-shot lead in the individual title chase. Gidali has posted 67-66=133 through two rounds. She leads teammate Margarita Ramos who is at five-under par 139.
All five Vikings improved their individual score on Monday over Sunday. PSU's 24-shot team improvement was easily the best of the day. Arizona was next-best with an 11-shot improvement.
Yada, a junior, moved into the top 20 on the individual leader board with her performance. She stands at four-over par 75-73=148 and is tied for 17th. Yada moved up eight spots on the leader board.
Miller is in a tie for 53rd with 82-76=158. The freshman moved up 11 spots on the leader board. Miller's 76 is one shot better than her previous best at Portland State, a 77 in the Rose City Collegiate Tournament last fall.
Senior
Tiffany Schoning also improved her game by three shots with an eight-over par 80 on Monday. She shot a one-over 37 with two birdies on her front nine, but followed with 43 on the back. Schoning stands at 83-80=163 and is tied for 64th through two rounds.
Sophomore
Loren Forney shot a second-round 79, shaving 14 strokes off her first-round score. Forney had two birdies on the round, and only two late double bogeys prevented her from one of her best rounds as a Viking. She is tied for 73rd among 79 golfers at 172.
Freshman
Emily Podlesny was just six-over after 13 holes, but gave back nine strokes on the final five, finishing with 87. She stands at 179 overall and in 77th place.

• The Arizona Wildcat Invitational continues with a final round on Tuesday. The Vistoso Golf Club is a par 72, 6,321-yard course.
• The Wildcat Invitational will certainly be the Vikings' most challenging tournament of the season, Eight teams are in ranked in the top 50 and 13 in the top 100. Only Portland State (124) and Northern Arizona (128) are outside the top 100. A total of 254 schools compete in golf at the Division I level. New Mexico State is ranked 97th.
• PSU's 308 total is the fourth-best round of the season for the Vikings among 14 played. The season-low is 305.
