OGDEN, Utah - The Portland State women's track and field team was selected to finish fourth of 11 teams in the Big Sky indoor track and field coaches poll, receiving 75 points. Northern Arizona, Weber State and Sacramento State were the only conference foes selected ahead of the Viks.
The Portland State women's team proved the critics wrong at the 2011-12 Big Sky indoor championship last season, tallying a third-place finish after being selected eighth of nine squads in the 2011-12 coaches poll. PSU boasted seven all-conference selections and the team registered points in 15 different events.
Meanwhile in the men's poll the squad was picked 11th in the survey, receiving 20 points.
Portland State is off to a strong start in the 2012-13 campaign after competing in the Jacksons Open on Dec. 1. Senior
Geronne Black took first in the 60-meter dash and PSU's 4x400-meter women's relay team placed second. Black is now tied for 10th in the country in the 60m with a time of 7.45.
On the men's side the jumpers caught the fan's attention as
Sean MacKelvie and
Rockwell Tufty impressed in their respective events. Mackelvie placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 45-02.25 (13.77 meters) while Tufty took second overall in the high jump with a mark of 6-06.75.
Portland State will be back in action on Jan. 12 when both teams compete at the UW Preview in Seattle, Wash. The meet is slated for 8 a.m.
