SEATTLE, Wash. – The Portland State men's tennis team completed day one of the PNW Intercollegiates hosted by the University of Washington, in Seattle, on Friday. The Viks faced tough competition and struggled through the opening round brackets.
In the “Pacific Bracket”
Antoine Bechmann gave Cristobal Ramos a tough test, taking the first set, 6-1 but falling in the next two, 6-4 and 6-0. Sophomore
Nate Chart faced Max Manthou and was defeated, 6-1, 6-2, while both freshman
Lukas Kortus and sophomore
Brent Wheeler were also downed in the first round of the bracket, losing to Dan Maasland (6-0, 6-2) and Stefan Micov (6-2, 6-2), respectively.
Freshman
Ian Risenhoover was entrenched in a battle with Nico Lunardi in the “Northwest Bracket” but eventually fell to defeat, 6-2, 7-6(6). Meanwhile in the same bracket, Jeff Hawkes downed freshman
Dillon Triance, 6-1, 6-2 while senior
Zach Lubek also came up short against Eduardo Bringold, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman
Wil Cochrane was also upended as Paxton Deuel got the best of the first-year player, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play Kortus and Wheeler fell to Farkas and Hawke in the “Pacific Doubles” bracket while things were closely contested in the “Northwest Doubles” bracket as the teams of Cochrane and Lubek and Chart and Triance hung tough with Ficthtel and Knox and Maasland and Randriamampandria but both teams came up short to the tune of 8-5. Bechmann and Risenhoover also fell to Malagutti/Rapp 8-4.
