PORTLAND, Ore. – Eryn Jones scored 20 points,
Lexi Bishop added a career high 18 and
Kelli Valentine registered a double-double as Portland State defeated Sacramento State for the second time in six days, this time 92-74 at the Stott Center.
Less than a week after winning 97-73 at the Hornets' gym, the Vikings fought off a late charge to secure their fourth straight victory and their fifth in the past six games.
PSU improved to 12-9 overall and 5-3 in the Big Sky.
Sac State, which lost its 13th in a row, fell to 3-19, 0-9 Big Sky.
The Hornets scored the first basket of the game on a Jasmine Cannady jumper, but it was all Portland State from there. The Vikings scored the next ten points, getting 3-pointers from Jones and Valentine, and baskets from Bishop and
Courtney VanBrocklin.
The Vikings finished the first half by making nine of 15 from three-point range as Jones hit all four of her attempts and Bishop knocked down two of her own.
Jones drained her third of the half at the 2:41 mark to make it 47-29 and just before the half VanBrocklin sank a three to give the Vikings a 55-37 lead going into the locker rooms.
Last week, Portland State led by over 20 the entire second half in cruising to the win. This time, they had to fend off the Hornets, who made a rally and momentarily put a scare into the Vikings.
After VanBrocklin made a fastbreak jump shot to make it 63-48 with 15:44 left, the Hornets went on a 19-7 run to get within five, 72-65, at the 7:08 mark.
Bishop scored two straight times down the floor and then
Shauneice Samms dropped in a jumper in the paint to give the Vikings a 78-67 advantage.
Tika Koshiyama-Diaz answered with a basket for the Hornets, but Portland State scored the next 11 points to essentially put the game out of reach.
Portland State finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, including 50 percent from behind the arc, making 10 of 20. They outrebounded Sac State, 51-39, and held the Hornets to 37.5 percent shooting.
Valentine recorded her second straight double-double against the Hornets, finishing with 13 points and a career best 14 rebounds.
Jones dished out eight of the Vikings' 22 assists and also had four steals. VanBrocklin added 17 points.
Kylie Kuhns led the Hornets with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Koshiyama-Diaz scored 16 points.
PSU hosts first place Northern Colorado on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
NOTES: The Vikings are 8-1 at home this year and winning by an average of 17.8 points ... PSU has won 10 of the last 11 in the series with Sac State ... the Vikings recorded a season high nine blocked shots.
