PORTLAND, Ore. – Natalie Day scored 22 points, Alexis Byrd added 21 and Amy Pupa had 15 rebounds to lead Portland past visiting Portland State, 62-54, on Friday afternoon at the Chiles Center.

The Vikings (2-2) had trouble finding the basket over the first 20 minutes, and despite a much-better played second period in which they held the lead with under eight minutes left, they couldn't overcome their shooting woes.

A sloppy first half saw the teams combine to shoot just 26.3 percent and the Vikings go scoreless for over nine-and-a-half minutes.

After Kate Lanz grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback to give Portland State a 13-7 lead with 12:58 left, the Vikings' offense went cold. Not until the 3:19 mark when Karley Lampman hit a 16-foot jumper did PSU score again.

The Vikings found themselves down by 10 just before the break, but a jumper from the free-throw line by Allie Brock as time expired pulled them to within 28-20 at halftime.

PSU scored the first 11 points after intermission with Lanz leading the way. The sophomore guard scored on an old-fashioned three-point play just eight seconds in, and after Courtney VanBrocklin hit a trey to bring the score within two, Lanz hit her own shot from behind the arc to put the Vikings in front, 29-28. Eryn Jones then found a streaking Shauneice Samms for a quick layup to push the lead to three.

Two free throws by Mikaela Rivard gave Portland State a 45-43 lead with 7:38 left in the game, but the Pilots responded with seven unanswered points and led the rest of the way.

Lanz scored 15 points and grabbed eight boards to lead the Vikings, while VanBrocklin had 14 points and three steals. Jones added six assists and three steals.

Portland, which improved to 4-2, outrebounded the Vikings, 44-33.

PSU is back in action on Sunday, taking on Gonzaga in Spokane at 2 p.m.
