Geiger's Golden Double Overtime Goal Leads PSU Past ULM, 3-2

LAS VEGAS, Nev.
- In temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the Portland State Vikings were able to earn their first overtime victory in almost four years, defeating the University of Louisiana at Monroe, 3-2, in double-overtime.

Junior Esty Geiger scored the golden goal, the first of her career, in the 104th minute of the contest. Sophomore Amanda Dutra fired a shot that was blocked by the Warhawk defense, but Geiger was there to cleanup the loose ball for the Vikings first win of the season.

ULM struck first in the contest with a goal in the 38th minute to put the Warhawks up, 1-0, but, it wasn't long after that the Vikings would score the equalizer.

Kimmie Tammen served one of the Viks eight corner kicks in the first half before the goal. Junior midfielder Amanda Howie finished the ball off the corner and put it past goalkeeper Alex Holland in the 40th minute.

Howie in similar fashion, almost converted a goal off of a corner kick Aug. 22 against Boise State. She fired a shot off a line drive from the corner, that just sailed high of the crossbar.

At the half, Portland State outshot Louisiana-Monroe, 8-5, and both teams had three shots on target. In the second half however, PSU did not hesitate to fire shots and accumulated five on goal in the first 15 minutes.

In the 55th minute, ULM's Stacey Carmack gave the lead back to the Warhawks, shortly after a corner kick.

10 minutes later, junior Melissa Trammell entered the contest for classmate Kala Renard. Shortly after her entrance, she fired a shot that sailed wide of the goal. Her next shot, however, would not miss the back of the net.

Junior midfielder Esty Geiger worked the ball to the endline and crossed it to Trammell who scored her first goal as a Viking and the second of her career. The goal tied the match at 2-2 in the 69th minute. Trammell, a native of Yakima, Wash., and a transfer from Pepperdine, scored her first goal since her freshman year.

The teams continued to try and end the deadlock with the Vikings as the aggressor and outshooting the Warhawks 14-2.

In the first overtime, Portland State seemed to control the ball and outshot Louisiana-Monroe, 5-0. ULM outfouled PSU in the period, 3-0.

In total, the Warhawks were able to draw Portland State offsides five times in the contest, while Viks were unable to return the favor.

Holland had 11 saves for ULM in the contest, while senior Rachel Jarvis accumulated four.

PSU advances to 1-2-0, while ULM falls to 1-1-0. The Vikings will return to action Sunday against Albany to continue in the Las Vegas Invitational. Kickoff will be at 10 a.m. Pacific.
