BERKELEY, Calif. – California had four players score in double-figures and outrebounded visiting Portland State by 21 to take home a 82-49 victory in the championship game of the Colliers International Classic on Sunday afternoon.
DeNesha Stallworth scored Cal's first eight points of the game, all from close range, and led all players with 25 points while shooting 12 of 14 from the field. The 6-foot-3 forward used her height to power to 22 first-half points.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a 13-2 lead just over two minutes into the game and Portland State never was able to recover. The Vikings did get to within seven, at 21-14, on a three-pointer by
Kelli Valentine, but Cal eventually would lead 54-29 at the break.
Cal (5-1) outrebounded the Vikings 50-29 and scored 44 points in the paint. The Golden Bears used their height advantage all afternoon as two other players over 6-foot tall both reached double-digits. 6-foot-3 center Talia Caldwell scored 13 and 6-foot guard Lindsay Sherbert had 15 and 10 boards.
Valentine paced PSU with 12 points, while
Shauneice Samms added six points and five rebounds.
Valentine and
Eryn Jones both were named to the all-tournament team. Jones chipped in six points on Saturday, with both of her buckets coming from behind the arc.
PSU (3-2) finished the Colliers International Classic 1-1, defeating Tulane yesterday, 83-76. The Green Wave were an NCAA tourney team a year ago, while Cal won the 2010 WNIT title.
NOTES: This was just the second ever meeting between PSU and Cal. They last played during the 1981-82 season ... Ten Viking players scored in the game ... PSU freshman forward
Allie Brock played a season-high 12 minutes and scored a career-best five points ... the Vikings next game is on Dec. 2, at home against Hawaii. Ironically, the PSU volleyball team also plays Hawaii that night, in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Seattle.
