The Portland State Athletics Department will induct six new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the NW Natural Building in downtown Portland.
The six former Viking athletes represent six different sports and are equally divided among men and women. Four of those inducted earned All-American honors in their respective sports, and five competed in NCAA national championship competitions while at Portland State.
Set to be inducted are: Chuck Seal (Wrestling, 1966-69), Karen Strong (Women's Basketball, 1975-77), Shelley Rumberger (Volleyball, 1985-88), Cynthia Macom (Softball, 1988-91), Matt Mandigo (Golf, 1990-93) and Orshawante Bryant (Football, 1997-2000).
Orshawante Bryant, Football, 1997-2000
Part of the extremely talented, first Division I recruiting class of 1996, Bryant lived up to the billing, setting 10 PSU records as a wide receiver and kick returner. He is still Portland State's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,449) and receptions (223). Bryant was also a talented kick return man who shares the school record for average in a season (29.4). He ranks fourth all-time at Portland State in all-purpose yards (5,428). Bryant was a three-time All-Big Sky Conference selection who twice led the conference in receiving yards. He also was a star on the first Viking team to reach the Division I playoffs (2000) before going on to a long career in the Arena Football League.
Cynthia Macom, Softball, 1987-91
Macom was a mainstay as a centerfielder and leadoff hitter for a Viking softball team that reached the NCAA playoffs her final two seasons and placed third in the nation in 1991. A two-time All-West Region selection, she was named second team All-American in '91. Though several of her records have since been broken, Macom left Portland State as the school record holder in career hits (245), runs (133), at bats (678) and steals (68), and season records for hits (73) and steals (21). She batted .408 in 1989 and had a career average of .361. The Viking team was 126-72 during her career.
Matt Mandigo, Golf, 1990-93
Mandigo had a solid four-year career for the Portland State men's golf program. The highlight was winning the 1992 NCAA II West Regional title with a 74.0 scoring average and advancing to the NCAA Championship. At the National Championship at The Carolina Club in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Mandigo shot 70-75-75-72=292 to place eighth and earn All-American honors. Mandigo was Portland State's team MVP in 1992 and 1993.
Shelley Rumberger, Volleyball, 1985-88
Shelley Rumberger's career at Portland State began and ended with National Championships in 1985 and 1988. She was a two-time All-Region selection as a middle blocker and earned All-American honors in 1988 as the Viking team went 116-41 during her four seasons. Upon the completion of her career, Rumberger ranked fourth all-time at PSU in kills and blocks.
Chuck Seal, Wrestling, 1966-69
A member of the 1967 National Championship wrestling team, Check Seal was a two-time NCAA II champion at 152 pounds (1967, 1969), placing second in 1968. He earned All-American honors three times. Seal won his first national championship in 1967 in the college division and went on to finish third in the university division that same season. In 1968 he was the national runner-up and he would reclaim the national championship and also finished sixth in the university division championship in '69. Seal possessed a career record of 50-11-2 in his time on the Park Blocks, with 15 wins by way of pin. As a senior, Seal led the team in victories and was team captain.
Karen Strong, Women's Basketball, 1975-77
Karen Strong was one of the top performers during the early era of women's athletics at Portland State. She played on a women's basketball team that went 41-18 over her two seasons. Strong averaged 22.1 points and 14.7 rebounds in 1975-76 - the best marks in school history. In 1976-77, Strong averaged 19.1 points and 14.0 rebounds per game.
